The Beer Weekender: April 12-14

Say what you will about big beer, but they’re good at clever marketing. Whenever a new beer goes into cans, we can’t help but think of this never-aired, somewhat crass Bud Light Lime ad from a few years back.

Thankfully, there’s much better beer than Bud Light Lime in cans, and with Bronx Pale Ale in cans available for the first time this week, and tallboy cans of Sixpoint’s summertime Krystalweizen Apollo making their annual return, we can’t help but shout from the rooftops about how much we like getting it in the can. After all, in addition to being easier to transport and more commonly recycled, cans are better for beer itself - with 100% protection from light, there’s no chance of getting a skunky can of beer. And if you still think you get a metallic taste from cans, it’s all in your head - the coating on the cans keeps it from happening. And hey - if you still don’t like the thought of drinking from a can, just pour that sweet deliciousness into a cup, dummy!

This weekend’s beer events are listed below. Cheers!

Happy Hour: You Drink, Everyone Wins

It’s Monday, April 8th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s the Smuttynose Bloom, a short batch beer brewed with eight kinds of edible flowers.

  • Adobe Blues (63 Lafayette Ave., at Fillmore St., New Brighton)
kicks off their second annual Mikkeller Week tonight. They’ll have the Koppi Coffee IPA, Wheat is the New Hops, and Monk’s Brew on tap, plus a huge lineup of bottles and each night, new vintage bottles on the menu. Definitely worth the trip to Staten Island!
  • It’s Samuel Smith Night tonight from 6-9pm at Valhalla (815 9th Ave., at 54th St., Hell’s Kitchen). Head toward the Hudson to get your hands on some beers from across the pond.

  • South 4th Bar & Grill (90 S. 4th St., at Berry St., Williamsburg) celebrates the NCAA championship tonight with the finals of their “Brewpointopia” competition between Blue Point and Sixpoint. From Long Island, it’s Spring Fling. From Brooklyn, it’s Bengali Tiger. Starting at 6pm, you drink $4 pints of these and the winner is determined by which beer kicks first!

  • Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) is hosting a five-course beer dinner with Stillwater’s Brian Strumke tonight at 7pm. Tickets are $45, and details are here. Ticket sales have ended online, but call 212-982-3006 to reserve.

Next Stone Enjoy By IPA will hit New York City

Stone Brewing Company’s Enjoy By IPA series has been distributed to select markets in several rounds already this year. The latest, Enjoy By 4.20.13 IPA, is as close as Connecticut, but didn’t make it to New York City. But the next one, Enjoy By 5.17.13 IPA, is coming here and will be available the week of April 15th after a bottling next Friday and a quick cross-country trip.

The Beer Weekender: April 5-7

There’s a lot going on beer-wise this weekend. First, there’s Beer for Beasts at The Bell House (149 7th St., at 3rd Ave., Gowanus) on Saturday, a great charity event put together by Sixpoint and Beer Advocate. That’s completely sold-out, so if you don’t have tickets, you might want to make alternate plans.

But we’re really looking forward to Session Beer Day 2013 on Sunday. The annual national celebration of low-alcohol beers is put together by Pennsylvania-based beer writer and cheerleader for session beer Lew Bryson. Honestly, this is something we’d like to observe every Sunday, not just this one. A couple bars in New York will celebrate with a solid lineup of flavorful, exciting sub-4.5% ABV beers on Sunday, so you can drink to your heart’s content. So, stock up on your session beers early and raise a glass to easy-drinking beer this Sunday!

Our full rundown of this weekend’s beer events is below…
