Happy Hour: Gnome-nclature

It’s Wednesday, April 3rd. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Our monthly Clues & Brews Trivia Night is tonight at 7:30pm at Breukelen Bier Merchants (182 Grand St., at Driggs Ave., Williamsburg). Enjoy some craft beer, answer some trivia questions, and win more beer! Winners of each trivia round get beer on the house… and there’s lots of great beer on tap to choose from!

  • Brooklyn Brewery and brewmaster Garrett Oliver visit Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) today starting at 3pm. They’ll have a cask of the Blast!, kegs of the 2010 Monster Ale, Mary’s Maple Porter, and new Silver Anniversary Lager, just to name a few, and some ghost bottles like the 2007 Black Ops!

  • City Swiggers (320 E. 86th St., at 2nd Ave., Upper East Side) hosts the Bronx Brewery tonight starting at 6pm. with the flagship Bronx Pale Ale, Black Pale Ale, and brand-new Belgian Pale Ale all on tap!

  • Celebrate the coming of Spring at Sunswick 35/35 (35-02 35th St., at 35th Ave., Astoria) tonight starting at 7pm, as they host a lineup of beers from Peak Organic (like the Espresso Amber and King Crimson) and 21st Amendment (like Lower DeBoom Barleywine and Brew Free or Die IPA).

  • Are you a fan of Troegs Nugget Nectar? The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) has it available three ways starting at 7pm: on tap, in a cask, and aged on year. Have at it!

  • Don your best gnome hat and head to Top Hops Beer Shop (94 Orchard St., at Broome St., Lower East Side) tonight from 6-8pm as they celebrate the beers of d’Achouffe with owner Chris Bauweraerts. On draft will be the Ommegang collaboration Gnomegang, plus Houblon Chouffe, McChouffe, and La Chouffe.

  • Are you a homebrewer? Stop by Bitter & Esters (700 Washington Ave., at Prospect Pl., Prospect Heights) tonight from 6:30-9:30pm for their bottle swap. Bring a bottle of a beer of your own to pour and two to swap (if you’d like) and they’ll share something from their own stash, too!
  • Enjoy Victory beers until 10pm tonight at Sycamore (1118 Cortelyou Rd., at Westminster Rd., Ditmas Park). They’ll be offering an $8 four-beer flight from the Pennsylvania brewery, including the Swing Session Saison, Ranch IPA, Yakima Glory, and more!

  • Long Island’s Port Jeff Brewing and Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village), team up for the bar’s weekly $10 Bourbon and Beer Tasting Series. Tonight from 7-9pm, $10 gets beers in a 3-beer tasting flight, 2 full pours, a taste of whisky, and an order of tater tots.

  • The East Coast vs. West Coast Punk Rock Brew Tour crosses the Hudson to rock out at Barcade Jersey City (163 Newark Ave., at Erie St., Jersey City) tonight at 7pm! Representing the East Coast will be Smuttynose, Victory, and Sixpoint. From the West Coast: Lagunitas, Oskar Blues, Sierra Nevada, and Ballast Point. These breweries will battle it out on the taps, all served with a soundtrack of punk and hardcore.

Happy Hour: Ruby Tuesday

It’s Tuesday, April 2nd. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • One Mile House (10 Delancey St., at Bowery, Lower East Side) puts on their Saison Fest tonight starting at 7pm. They’ll put on Stillwater Cellar Door, Saison Dupont, Greenport Spring Turning Rye Saison, Elysian Saison Poivre, and more on tap, plus even more in bottles, and a few surprises!

  • Spring Lounge (48 Spring St., at Mulberry St., Little Italy) hosts Captain Lawrence tonight at 6pm. Try their new collaborative brew with the bar, Ruby Tuesday, a Belgian-style raspberry ale. They’ll also pour the Sunblock, Smoked Porter, Liquid Gold, and more, along with free food from the folks up at Gleason’s in Peekskill.

  • The East Coast vs. West Coast Punk Rock Brew Tour heads to the South Slope to rock out at Greenwood Park (555 7th Ave., at 19th St., South Slope) tonight at 7pm! Representing the East Coast will be Smuttynose, Bronx Brewery, Victory, and Sixpoint. From the West Coast: Lagunitas, Oskar Blues, Sierra Nevada, and Ballast Point. These breweries will battle it out on the taps, all served with a soundtrack of punk and hardcore.

  • This week’s Tuesday Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) features Semi-Sours and Cellar Reserves, hosted by B.R. Rolya! $20 gets you six tastings of beers like Thiriez Blonde, Jolly Pumpkin Weizen Bam, Trois Dames L'Amoureuse Rouge, and more! Things get underway at 7:30pm.

  • Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) hosts our friend Mike Lovullo tonight at 7pm for their free Tuesday Tasting. Join Mike as he guides you through a tasting of some wonderful brews like the Pripps Carnegie Porter, The Bruery Sour in the Rye, and the Midnight Sun XXX Black IPA.

  • Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) hosts Stonetoday starting at 4pm. Come in for some Cali goodness like the Old Guardian Barley Wine, Cali-Belgique IPA, Smoked Porter with Vanilla Bean, and more!

Yankee Stadium “Craft Beer” stand is “Crafty”

A photo of a new beer stand at Yankee Stadium today has gone viral. Writer Amanda Rykoff posted this picture, which shows a new “Craft Beer Destination” stand that serves four options - Blue Moon Belgian White, Leinenkugel Summer Shandy, Crispin Cider, and Batch 19 Pre-Prohibition Lager, all of which are brands owned and brewed by beer giant MillerCoors.

This, coincidentally, came the same day as an AdWeek article explained how big brewers are hiding their “crafty” beers - meant to compete directly with small craft brewers - behind new brand and brewery names that intentionally mislead the consumer.

Happy Hour: No Fooling

It’s Monday, April 1st. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Mission Dolores (249 4th Ave., at Carroll St., Park Slope) celebrates their Third Anniversary tonight with a lineup of great beers like Barrier Craven Belgian Red, Mikkeller + Grassroots Wheat is the New Hops, and the new Captain Lawrence-Mission Dolores collaboration, The Prime Directive. The new beer taps at 7pm, there’s an open bar from 6-7pm, when they’ll also have free food from Fort Reno BBQ!

  • Celebrate the release of this year’s Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout tonight from 6-9pm at Valhalla (815 9th Ave., at 54th St., Hell’s Kitchen). Get your first taste of this year’s release!

  • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s the Bear Republic Black Racer, a limited-release Black IPA.

Pony Bar UES shifts strategy from craft to crap

Less than a year after opening, The Pony Bar UES (1444 First Ave. at 75th St., Upper East Side) announced that starting today, April 1st, they will be evolving their draft beer list to better fit the neighborhood’s tastes. While they’ll continue to serve 20 beers on tap, those beers will be primarily adjunct lagers brewed by Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors. “It was time to move in another direction,” Pony Bar owner Dan McLaughlin told us. “We were already selling a lot of Bud and Bud Light bottles at our Upper East Side location, so we figured, why not give the neighborhood what they want?”
