The buzz around the brand-new Whole Foods Brooklyn(214 3rd St., at 3rd Ave., Gowanus) probably won’t die down for quite some time, and we’re probably contributing to it by telling you this, if you haven’t been already. There’s an exclusive beer from Evil Twin available in bottles and on tap at Whole Foods called Even More Denmark.
In a barn in the woods of Maine is a small brewery that’s gotten some big buzz. Oxbow Brewing is off a winding, wooded road in the town of Newcastle - miles and miles from the nearest Interstate highway or major city, attracting beer-thirsty city dwellers into the woods. Oxbow in many ways embraces the tenets of a Farmhouse Brewery, in that it’s on 18 sprawling acres of land, that there’s a tractor, and that they specialize in Belgian-style farmhouse ales.
But a couple hundred miles and seemingly worlds away, three spots here in the city are gearing up for co-founders Tim Adams and Geoff Masland’s visit for the launch of their beers in New York. This weekend, Proletariat(102 St. Marks Pl., at 1st Ave., East Village), Spuyten Duyvil(350 Metropolitan Ave., at Havermeyer St., Williamsburg), and Tørst(615 Manhattan Ave., at Nassau Ave., Greenpoint) will all host events featuring Oxbow’s beers, including the Oxbow/Stillwater collaboration, Stillbow Oxtisanal, and a host of their core beers, like their year-round Farmhouse Pale Ale, and seasonals Oxtoberfest and Saison Noel. With three chances to introduce yourself to the brewery, it’ll be tough to make that many excuses.
Those events - and more of this weekend’s beer happenings - are in our roundup below…
A forthcoming brewery on Staten Island - which would be the borough’s first in the recent craft beer boom - got a boost today with the announcement of a grant from the New York City Economic Development Corporation. Flagship Brewing was among seven businesses who earned grants as winners of the Staten Island Storefronts competition, which awarded the funds to businesses planning to open in retail spaces in Downtown Staten Island - the neighborhoods of New Brighton, St. George, Tompkinsville, Stapleton, and Clifton.
