Because the city can’t seem to go a week without a new beer spot opening, First Look is our roundup of the latest places to open that specialize in craft beer - bars, restaurants, and stores. This week, we take a look at a new craft beer sports bar in Williamsburg and two long-anticipated openings from well-known craft beer bar proprietors.
Eugene Oregon’s Ninkasi Brewing makes its New York City debut today at locations across the city, with two kickoff events at Blind Tiger Ale House(281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) starting at 3pm at and The Gate(321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) starting at 6pm.

With Memorial Day Weekend behind us and the mercury hitting the 80s this week, we can safely say that summer weather has arrived, solstice be damned. Warmer weather means beer drinkers don’t want to be weighed down by heavy, boozy beers. After all, high-alcohol brews can do a number on dehydrating you if you’re sweating or sitting out in the sun.
If you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, now is a perfect time to start sampling the session beers that have become a trend among American craft brewers in the past year. The Tri-State Area’s craft breweries are no different in contributing to that trend. While some breweries seem to have a loose interpretation of what’s “sessionable,” we’ll offer up these refreshing suggestions brewed locally with their alcohol content so you can judge for yourself.
Drinking cold beer outdoors and firing up the barbeque are traditions that we associate with summer. Depending on your living situation, it might not be as easy to partake in those activities in New York City. Thankfully, with the help of two local breweries and Jimmy’s No. 43, you’ll be able to head to the Bronx or Queens and make your Memorial Day Weekend dreams a reality.
