Two of the most sought-after hoppy brews of the year are arriving in New York this week to chase away your midwinter blues. Troegs Nugget Nectar arrived this week at beer shops across the city (in new packaging for 2015!) and this year’s batch of Bell’s Hopslam debuts on Monday.
While neither of our two home teams are in this year’s big game, that’s obviously no excuse to watch the Super Bowl with millions of others on Sunday night. And if you’re going to watch the Patriots take on the Seahawks, you might as well celebrate with regionally-appropriate beer for the party. Here are some beers available in New York that hail from the Pacific Northwest and New England.
Earlier this month, Belgian brewery Hof ten Dormaal was ravaged by a fire, causing extensive damage to their bottling line, brewhouse, and beer in storage. They started a gofundme campaign to recover from the fire – a campaign that has so far raised €12,000 of the €25,000 goal. They’ve already begun the cleanup, but there’s a long road ahead to rebuild this farm brewery nestled in the Belgian countryside just outside of Brussels.
So tonight, Beer Street(413 Graham Ave., at Withers St., Williamsburg) is raising funds to help the brewery’s campaign. From 5pm to midnight, the bar will have on four beers from Hof ten Dormaal, including Zure van Tildonk, an authentic spontaneously fermented wild ale, and Wit Goud, a Belgian Blond Ale brewed with chicory root. Beer Street will be contributing funds raised at the event to the brewery’s crowdfunding efforts.
If you were looking for a good excuse to escape your post-blizzard cocoon and drink some beer, now you have one… and it’s for a cause!
If you’ve come here expecting me to vilify a successful small brewer for “selling out” to Anheuser-Busch, go somewhere else. There’s plenty of commentary on that, particularly on social media and message boards.
If you’ve come here expecting me to break down Anheuser-Busch’s acquisition of Elysian Brewing, you can just go ahead and read something from the last two timesI’ve written about similar transactions.
I’m not going to tell you what to think. If you’ve come here at all, you’re probably a beer geek who has strong opinions about this. You don’t care what I think, because you’ve already made up your mind. And we can argue from here till eternity about the pros and cons of this deal, but it’s not worth arguing about. I’m not here to talk you out of whatever opinion you may have.
But no matter how you or I stand on the deal, here’s the truth: not many other people care.
The first new out-of-state beer import of 2015 has arrived on New York’s shores: Lewiston, Maine-based Baxter Brewing shipped their beers to town yesterday, and they’ll release them with a lineup of events next week. The beers have made the trip from Maine and will roll out around the city starting next week.
