BARch Madness 2015: The IPA Region
image

Are your brackets filled for March Madness? Then it’s time to play BARch Madness! It’s our 64-bar tournament to determine New York City’s favorite beer bar.

For the next three weeks, we’ll play in seeded tournament format, with the bar receiving the most votes in each matchup moving on to the next round. Finally, we introduce the final region of our bracket: The IPA Region.

Don’t forget to vote in our other regions, The Stout Region, The Saison Region, and The Pilsner Region!

The bars for the tournament were selected to be geographically diverse, and represent each of the five boroughs. Breweries and Brewpubs were not eligible (because, really, nothing beats fresh beer), nor were bars less than three months old. Seedings were determined based on the bar’s total check-ins on Untappd since last March. That means the four #1 seeds are Rattle-N-Hum, Torst, and The Pony Bar Hell’s Kitchen, and The Ginger Man.

The IPA Region is anchored by #1 seed The Ginger Man and #2 seed The Jeffrey. Will there be upsets in the IPA Region? Defending BARch Madness champion 4th Avenue Pub faces from stiff competition from newcomer District Tap House in this year’s first round. It’s a cross-Brooklyn battle between #7 seed Mission Dolores in Park Slope and #10 seed The Sampler in Bushwick. And could Beer Street’s 2014 makeover put them in the running to beat a bar that celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2014, Barcade Brooklyn?

Once again, you decide! Vote below, and may the best bar win!

For the next three weeks, we’ll play in seeded tournament format, with the bar receiving the most votes in each matchup moving on to the next round. Now, let’s introduce the third region of our bracket: The Stout Region.

Don’t forget to vote in our other regions, The Saison Region, The Pilsner Region, and The IPA Region!

The Stout Region is anchored by #1 seed Tørst and #2 seed The Pony Bar UES. There are some tough matchups in this region. Among the hardest to choose will be the 8-9 battle between beer bar stalwarts Jimmy’s No. 43 and Mugs Alehouse. Midtown powerhouse Beer Authority could face a challenge from Brooklyn upstart Glorietta Baldy. And it’s a choice between old and new as #5 seed Taproom No. 307 takes on the 105-year old #12 seed, Bohemian Hall.

You decide! Vote below, and may the best bar win!

The region is anchored by #1 seed The Pony Bar Hell’s Kitchen and #2 seed One Mile House. Will there be upsets in the Saison Region? It’ll be a tough call between last year’s BARch Madness runner up, Cooper’s Craft + Kitchen and beer geek haven The Double Windsor. Will Beer Culture make a run at the title with a favorable #3 seed against Randolph Beer? And can Proletariat be a dark horse in this bracket as they face Astoria’s Crescent and Vine?

You decide! Vote below, and may the best bar win!

Are your brackets filled for March Madness? Then it’s time to play BARch Madness! It’s our 64-bar tournament to determine New York City’s favorite beer bar, and it begins today.

For the next three weeks, we’ll play in seeded tournament format, with the bar receiving the most votes in each matchup moving on to the next round. Voting on the first round begins today for the first of our four “regions:” The Pilsner Region

Don’t forget to vote in our other regions, The Saison Region, The Stout Region, and The IPA Region!

But upsets will be common, and there are some tough draws for the first round. For example, in this region alone, it’ll be a tough call between two relative newcomers: Bondurants on the Upper East Side and St. Gambrinus Beer Shoppe in Brooklyn. Plus, does East Village stalwart ABC Beer Co. have what it takes to beat Barcade’s newest outpost in Chelsea?

You decide! See the bracket and vote below, and may the best bar win!

TRiNiTY Brewing launches in NYC this week
image

Off a road called “Garden of the Gods” in one of the most straightlaced conservative towns in America at the end of a strip mall in the midst of suburban sprawl lies a brewery that embodies virtually none of those things. Colorado Springs, Colorado’s TRiNiTY Brewing is a little offbeat, a little crazy, and makes some very well-regarded beer. And this week, they launch in New York City.

Why I Hate St. Patrick’s Day: A Beer Lover’s Rant

It’s St. Patrick’s Day again. As a beer writer, every year, I’m inundated with pitches from Public Relations flacks trying to pitch their beer (or non-beer) related product saying it “would be a great fit for any St. Patrick’s Day-related coverage you’re doing.” And every year, each of those pitches go directly to my trash folder, because my only St. Patrick’s Day coverage is an anti-St. Patrick’s Day screed like this one.

Actually, I’m going to break with tradition here for a second. Yesterday, I did receive one pitch from a PR agency representing the National Institutes of Health:
