In New York, we’re grateful to have access to a lot of fantastic beer, but new stuff just keeps coming. Three more breweries have added distribution in the city. In this edition of New Brews, get to know Grey Sail Brewing of Rhode Island, Forbidden Root of Chicago, and Lost Nation Brewing of Vermont.
One of the Hudson Valley’s hidden gems won’t be so hidden at The Owl Farm(297 9th St., at 5th Ave., Park Slope) Wednesday night. TheBrewery at Bacchus in New Paltz will take over the taps then in their first-ever event in New York City. The small brewpub, based in a restaurant just off the college town’s Main Street, has been sending a few kegs down to the city on occasion, but this is one big occasion, with ten of their beers pouring in one place – and that’s more than they usually pour at their own brewpub!
Today is August 3rd. Temperatures are hovering around 90 degrees in New York, with heat indicies well into the 90s. Air conditioners are cranking, and standing in a subway station for more than a few minutes is bordering on unbearable. And despite all this, there are several beer stores in the city that are already carrying pumpkin beer.
And you might be thinking, “that’s absurd. It’s way too early for pumpkin beer.”
And for years, I told youthat youwere right. And you’re still right, in the sense that if you associate pumpkin beers with the fall, it’s not fall yet. The calendar tells us that.
But unfortunately, whether the growing seasonal creep of pumpkin beers conditioned us or not, there are compelling business reasons for pumpkin beers to be released in August. Here’s why.
These brewers are making the top-rated beers in New York City
Untappd is - pardon the pun - an
untapped wealth of knowledge about beer. With millions of beer check-ins
and ratings, there’s so much data to peruse. So, each quarter, we
provide an update on a pressing question: what are the top rated beers
brewed in the five boroughs?
A little over two months after an arson shut the bar down and caused significant damage, The Pony Bar UES (1444 First Ave. at 75th St., Upper East Side) will officially reopen tonight at 5pm. While many things about the bar will remain mainly the same, there will be a few new touches to the bar that were added when the opportunity came to remodel.
In a ceremony at Jimmy’s No. 43 capping off July Good Beer Month, the Good Beer Seal
committee announced nine new bars as inductees on Wednesday Night.
These bars will now proudly display the Good Beer Seal, which certifies
bars that don’t just merely offer craft beer, but celebrate it. In
addition to adding several bars in the five boroughs, the committee
chose to add a bar on Long Island - the seventh to be certified outside of
New York City proper.
