Is Pumpkin Beer Dead?

Over the past few years, we’ve written to death about seasonal creep and its primary culprit: pumpkin beer. As the popularity of pumpkin and pumpkin spiced beers grew, brewers fought to push their beer into the marketplace earlier and earlier to grab a bigger piece of the pumpkin pie. With that came a backlash among beer geeks that it was simply “too soon.” And even as early as 2013, the increased production of this style resulted in a glut of beer that sat on shelves well into the winter in some retail environments. Now, there are more signs that pumpkin beer’s heyday may be over.

New Belgium announces NYC arrival

Fort Collins, Colorado-based New Belgium Brewing announced today that they will begin distribution across New York State, including New York City, beginning in May. The move will continue their push up the East Coast as they begin operating their second brewery, in Asheville, North Carolina, this spring. The brewery previously announced their expansion to New Jersey, which will occur in March, leaving only New England, West Virginia, and Oklahoma without distribution among the 50 US States.

Bridge & Tunnel launches crowdfunding campaign

Late last year, Bridge & Tunnel Brewery opened its new, DIY-style brewery and taproom in Ridgewood, Queens. Owner Rich Castagna , with the help of friends and family, moved into the space from his own garage and culled through materials like old holding tanks, steam kettles, dairy equipment, and a secondhand tap system to use in the new space. While the taproom has been a success and Castagna’s beer has beer more widely available than ever, there’s a key piece of equipment missing, and he’s launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the project.
