Are your brackets already busted from March Madness? Then it’s time to play BARch Madness! It’s our annual 64-bar tournament to determine New York City’s favorite beer bar, and it begins today.
For the next three weeks, we’ll play in seeded tournament format, with the bar receiving the most votes in each matchup moving on to the next round. There are four regions in the tournament: the Pilsner Region, the Saison Region, the Stout Region, and the IPA Region. Voting in each region will be completed on a rolling basis.
It’s our third year of Barch Madness, and last year’s winner, Valhalla, and 2014 winner Fourth Avenue Pub, are still basking in the glory of their wins. Will they be able to put another notch in their belts? Or will someone else be declared champion in 2016?

As a beer writer, every year, I’m inundated with pitches from Public Relations flacks trying to pitch their beer (or non-beer) related product saying it “would be a great fit for any St. Patrick’s Day-related coverage you’re doing.” And every year, each of those pitches go directly to my trash folder, because my St. Patrick’s Day coverage is almost exclusively about what I dislike about St. Patrick’s Day.

This week, Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) celebrates 20 years of pouring craft beer in the West Village. A cornerstone of the beer scene in New York City, the Tiger has played a part of many drinkers’ discovery of good beer in the city. Today, we salute the Tiger for pioneering good beer and staying relevant as good beer bars come and go. Here’s a little history and a reflection on what we love about Blind Tiger.
