New York breweries take home medals at World Beer Cup

New York breweries earned six awards at the bi-annual World Beer Cup, held on Friday night in Philadelphia. The state’s breweries matched their 2014 total, the last time the awards were held, and one brewery took home the state’s biggest award in the 20-year history of the event.

Strap in for Some Special Beer Appearances This Weekend

This week, some special guests are coming into town to pour their beer. San Diego’s Modern Times Beer and Portland, Maine’s Bissell Brothers are among several out-of-town breweries whose beer you’ll see around town at some of the city’s top beer bars this weekend. They all come together in a huge event at The Ginger Man (11 E. 36th St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) on Saturday. Distributors registered a whole bunch of beer with the state just so they could serve it this weekend, and you get to reap the delicious, delicious benefits.

State Working Group wants to let you drink before noon on Sundays

It’s been said that you can’t drink all day unless you start in the morning, but that’s not quite legal on Sundays in New York right now. While not always enforced, current Alcoholic Beverage Control Law in New York State prohibits bars and restaurants from serving drinks before noon on Sundays. But a report released last week from a State Liquor Authority Working Group recommends making Sunday morning drinking a reality. It’s part of several changes suggested by the group to modernize the state’s liquor laws.

Three breweries have opened in The Bronx in as many years, and that’s put the borough on the beer map. Add in a number of good beer bars plus two distilleries, and you’ve got a recipe for a great afternoon. This week, The Bronx Tourism Council and Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. announced a new initiative to offer an afternoon touring the borough’s breweries and distilleries – the Savor The Bronx Breweries & Distilleries Trolley Tour.
