Beer for Beasts returns

Sixpoint Brewery’s Beer for Beasts event has been on a hiatus since 2014, but it will return this year in two sessions on Saturday, October 15th. The event, which features never-before-brewed collaboration beers with breweries, businesses, and other members of the beer community, will be back at The Bell House in Brooklyn. The event raises money for the Humane Society of New York and will serve up collaborations between Sixpoint and Ample Hills Creamery, Bonn Place Brewing, Finback Brewery, Pine Box Rock Shop, and many more. Tickets are $70 and available now through Eventbrite.

Meet Your New Arrivals

Two breweries from out-of-state are heading to New York City in October. Revolution Brewing in Chicago is fresh off a huge expansion, becoming one of the fastest-growing in the country after more than tripling their production over the past year. They’ll start rolling out beer the week of October 3rd, with launch events across the city. Among the beers to expect: their flagship Anti-Hero IPA, Mosaic Hero, Oktoberfest, and kegs from the Deep Wood series of barrel-aged brews. Also headed our way: Pennsylvania’s Saucony Creek Brewing. Among the beers you’ll see in town: the Hop Suplex Imperial IPA, Maple Mistress Imperial Pumpkin Ale, and the xReserve Peach & Ginger Saison. Revolution will be carried by Manhattan Beer Distributors, and Saucony Creek by S.K.I.

September goes Sour in Brooklyn

In case you didn’t notice, we’re in the midst of the Brooklyn Sour Beer Fest. Seven venues in the borough are participating with sours on tap throughout this sixteen-day celebration of sour beer. In addition, there are special events, like Wednesday’s Fruited Sour Night at Bar Great Harry, with eight sours brewed with fruit on tap. Thursday night, Cardiff Giant pours sours from New York State. And next Thursday, the 29th, there’s a blowout of sour beers to close out the event at The Owl Farm. Bring your antacid.

Brooklyn Pour turns six

This Saturday, the Village Voice’s Brooklyn Pour returns to the Greenpoint Expo Center. It’s the sixth year for the event, which continues to draw impressive crowds and a long list of breweries. Along with a selection of breweries from around the US and the globe, several NYC breweries will be pouring, including Other Half, Flagship, Big Alice, Rockaway and KelSo, and this year’s charitable partner is Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue. Tickets are still available for $55-85 for the afternoon event, which runs from 3-6pm (2-6pm for VIPs). On a related note, Queens gets its own beer fest this year – the Queens Beer Festival will be held on October 15th and 16th at LIC Flea and Food.

Tour Bushwick’s Brewing History

Kings County Brewers Collective, Bushwick’s first brewery in decades, opened on Troutman Street in August. But the neighborhood has a long, storied history of brewing beer. On Saturday, October 22nd, A Brewing History of Bushwick takes a walking tour of various locations that were key parts of the borough’s 19th century brewing scene. Tickets for the tour are $30, and you can find more info on the tour website.

Save the Date for Blocktoberfest

The New York City Brewers Guild presents their third annual Blocktoberfest on Saturday, October 22nd. This year, it heads to The Well in Brooklyn to serve beers from more than 15 different NYC breweries, from Flagship to Finback, Transmitter to Strong Rope, and everything in between. Tickets start at $10 and run up to $30 for admission and five 12-ounce beers. Proceeds support the NYC Brewers Guild.

Cans on Cans on Cans

Canned offerings from the city’s local breweries just keep expanding. There’s a four-pack of beer releases at Other Half Brewing on Saturday, including two new Imperial IPAs with Southern Hemisphere hops (J-17 and Southern Passion from South Africa, Nelson Sauvin and Moteuka from New Zealand) and fresh cans of Green Diamonds and Double Mosaic Dream. Also this weekend, Greenpoint Beer & Ale Co. will debut cans of their Instant Credibility Double IPA and Smash Street Extra Pale Ale. The sale begins Friday at 5pm at the brewery (7 North 15th St, Williamsburg). The 16-ounce cans sell for $16 per 4-pack. Meanwhile, Interboro, New York City’s newest brewery, debuts their first cans of their Premiere IPA (with Citra, Mosaic, and Galaxy hops) on Friday from 6-9pm at their brewery (942 Grand St, Williamsburg). 16-ounce cans will be $16 per 4-pack, with a 3 4-pack maximum.

Take the L to the Taprooms

Speaking of Interboro, New York City’s two newest breweries are official open for business, and both will open their taprooms this weekend. Interboro’s grand opening will be this Friday from 6-9pm and they’ll be open Saturday and Sunday in East Williamsburg, just off the Grand Street L Train stop. Three stops further down the line, Kings County Brewers Collective opened their Bushwick taproom late last month, pouring beer in a space on Troutman Street just off the Jefferson Street L Train stop. It’s open Thursday through Sunday this weekend.

Modern Times returns to New York

We knew when Modern Times shipped over some beer from San Diego this spring that the brewery would make some sporadic appearances in New York. One of those will be this week, with dual tap takeovers on Thursday, September 8th in Manhattan at As-Is starting at 3pm and in Brooklyn at The Double Windsor starting at 6pm.

Two Bucks for a Beer

Beer bargain hunters, take note: The Well announced last week that every Tuesday will be Two Buck Tuesday. Ten or more different beers will be priced at $2 all night long every Tuesday, with the list changing each week. More details are on their Facebook Page.

Evil Twin teases new space

In an Instagram post earlier this week, gypsy brewer Evil Twin Brewing teased a photo of demolition in their newfound brewery space off the L Train. The space, off the Halsey Street stop in Ridgewood, Queens, is still a long ways off taking shape, but it would mark the second brewery currently under construction in the borough – Chris Cuzme’s Fifth Hammer Brewing being the other, in Long Island City.

Get produce with a side of beer

GrowNYC’s Greenmarkets will be serving samples of beer, cider, and spirits made in New York State again this fall. The program, which runs through November, will feature samples from breweries across the region, including Threes, Rockaway, and Helderberg Mountain, at the Union Square, McCarren Park, Grand Army Plaza, and Fort Green Park Greenmarkets. You can check out the schedule on the GrowNYC website.

This Weekend’s Beer Events

Tickets are still available for Captain Lawrence’s Sour’d in September on Saturday. The event at the brewery in Elmsford brings over 100 different sour beers from 75 breweries, with tickets starting at $65. For some sour beers closer to home, Wild Days of Summer starts on Sunday at Torst, with a lineup of sours from Evil Twin, The Bruery, J. Wakefield, and more. And on Staten Island, Flagship Brewery celebrates their third annual Oysterfest, bringing back their Oyster Stout and over 10,000 oysters waiting to be shucked at their brewery on Sunday.
