Picked up the Woodstock Inn Brewery Kanc Country Maple Porter at Wyoming Package in Wyoming, RI, intrigued by the fact that the sugarhouse on the label was one I visited several times as a kid. Ooh, maple syrup! I love maple syrup! This pours on dark but not thick, with a puny soapy head. A very misleading aroma - not much maple, I actually pick up something along the lines of a smoky red wine with a subtle sweetness. Oddly, that’s also the taste. I rope my mom in, she says, “it tastes like grandpa’s wine.” There’s very little maple or porter about this. I’ll give it points for a clean finish, but I’m praying that I just got stuck with a bad batch that sat out on a pallet in the sun outside the store.

The newest offering from Cottrell Brewing Company in Pawcatuck, Connecticut, their Mystic Bridge IPA is hoppy little number pours a dark amber with a thin off-white head without much lacing. Lots of orange, lemon, and pine in the nose. The hops are pronounced but complemented by some juicy fruit notes and a clean finish. A good follow-up to their popular Old Yankee Ale.

Troegs Hop Back Amber Ale.

Consistently one of my favorite Amber Ales. That’s saying a lot, because it’s the only one in my top five that’s from the east coast.
