Here’s a look at what some of New York’s best beer bars are offering up on tap this week. But get there quick… before they run out!
Brooklyn Brewery’s Cookie Jar Porter has made its appearance in the city, and yes, it’s exactly what you’d think: a porter brewed with oatmeal and honey to give it a delicious sweet cookie finish. You can find it at Barcade and Blind Tiger right now, although it made an appearance late last week at Pony Bar, too.
Geary’s Winter Ale has been popping up all over the city as well. This Maine import is an English IPA, so expect a bitter blowback, but some nice maltiness. It’s on tap at Standings and Barcade at the moment.
If you want something wicked hoppy, seek out the Magic Hat Odd Notion 100 IBU IPA. For the uninitiated, IBUs are International Bittering Units, or the measure of bitterness in beer… and 100 is a lot. It’s nice to see Magic Hat put out a limited-release big beer, so get it while you can at Pony Bar, Rattle ‘N Hum, or Blind Tiger.
Also, get your hands on Oregon’s Rogue John John Dead Guy Ale at Pacific Standard this week. Rogue Beer and Rogue Spirits combined forces to take their standard Dead Guy Ale and age it for three months in Rogue Whiskey oak barrels. If you like barrel-aged beers, try Goose Island’s Bourbon County Stout while you’re at Pacific Standard, too.
Most importantly, don’t forget that Brazen Head’s Tri-Annual Cask Festival is this weekend. The fun kicks off Friday, and among the beers making appearances in cask form will be Smuttynose Chai Porter, Firestone Walker Nectar IPA, and Victory Yakima Twilight Ale. Most notable will be a wide selection of casks from Pittsburgh’s East End Brewing, which is making its first visit to New York City.
Happy Drinking!
