What’s on Tap: the beers to drink in NYC this weekend

Another weekend has arrived. For me, sadly, beer will be hard to come by, as I’m on painkillers for my busted knee. But for the rest of you, please enjoy the recent newcomers and old favorites that New York City’s beer bars have to offer this weekend.

Since Vermont was the site of the busting of my knee, I’ll point out that McNeill’s Brewery, out of Brattleboro, has made a pretty aggressive push into the New York market over the past couple months. Their Pullman’s Porter and Firehouse Amber are their standouts, both of which you can find at Blind Tiger Ale House in Manhattan and The Double Windsor in Brooklyn, a spot that’s worth the trip on the F Train to Windsor Terrace (edit: do this early on Friday night, as Ben Kabak points out that the F is running shuttle buses from Jay Street to Windsor Terrace again this weekend)

A personal favorite of mine is on tap at Pacific Standard right now: Elysian’s Loser Pale Ale, brewed to celebrate last year’s 20th anniversary of Sub Pop Records, is a tasty malty brew that’s bittered with Sorachi Ace, which gives it a light lemony aroma and crisp taste. It also packs a higher punch for an American Pale Ale at 6.5% ABV.

If you’re seeking a new notch in your beer headboard, another brewery that's new on the New York scene lately is out of Southbridge, Massachusetts - Honest Town’s IPA is on cask at The Pony Bar right now. The Pony’s also got Goose Island 312 Wheat - a favorite of even the less-sophisticated beer drinkers I’ve encountered.

Hey, do you like big beers? Like, really big beers? You might want to hop on board (no pun intended) the G Train (edit: also not running this weekend, but it’s not a bad walk from the L Train) to Brouwerij Lane in Greenpoint for their first-ever tasting sessions. This weekend, for $25, you get to sample 10 different barleywines, including Brooklyn Monster Ale, Victory Old Horizontal, and Uinta Anniversary XIV.

Speaking of Unita, I’ll be off in Utah next week, sharing my experiences with three-two beer on here and suffering the consequences of altitude sickness. So, check back here to follow my notes on an alcohol-deprived region of the country (notes from last trip: three-two Blue Moon tastes like “watered-down orange juice,” Unita's King’s Peak Porter could “use a bit more booze to avoid the black coffee taste”).

Happy drinking!
