You’ve got a mix-and-match six pack to take to a desert island. The beers replenish themselves, but you’ve only got six different ones.
Dogfish Head Brewery announced today that they’ll be collaborating with Russian River and two Italian Breweries to open a brewpub on the rooftop of 200 Fifth Avenue by late this summer. In addition to the breweries, the project will also be backed by restauranteurs Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich… which means good food to pair with the good beer. The details of the brewery were spilled in a Dogfish Head press release today:
The rooftop bar and restaurant will house a copper-clad brewing system. The idea is to create an artisanal, old world Italian craft brewery that just happens to be located on a rooftop in Manhattan, says Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione. The four brewers (Teo Musso of Birrificio Le Baladin, Leonardo Di Vincenzo of Birra del Borgo, Vinnie Cilurzo of the Russian River Brewing Company, and Calagione) are working together on recipes for Eatalys house beers. Those beers will feature Italian and American ingredients. The beers will be unpasteurized, unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and hand-pulled through traditional beer engines for the most authentic and pure presentation. The four individual brewers will also occasionally brew beers under their own names on site. The rooftop restaurant project will pair artisanal rustic, homemade beers with the artisanal, rustic cooking of Chef Mario Batali. Additional Italian and American regional craft beers will be served both at the rooftop bar and within the downstairs restaurants.
It’s about time. Given the New York beer scene and the lack of brewpubs (there is exactly one on-premises brewing operation in all of New York City at the moment), a new brewpub in the city is long overdue. And given the cost of real estate in New York, it would have to take some big names with lots of financial backing to get one off the ground. The summer can’t come soon enough!
