First beer in Utah: Squatters Full Suspension Pale Ale. It’s not great, but I need to develop a taste for three-two beer.

Sixpoint’s fifth anniversary celebration has been taking place all month. It’s like one never-ending mobile party. Tonight’s spot is Bierkraft in Park Slope, where they’ll be rolling out the humdinger pictured above. The free tasting starts at 7.

Tomorrow night, Sixpoint will be celebrating with an event at Barcade in Williamsburg. The fun starts at 6pm, and you’ll have your pick of 17 taps of Sixpoint. Even the biggest Sixpoint fan will likely find something special there.

New Paint, New Name

A new design and new name has arrived for this blog: Brewr is now Brew York, New York, to demonstrate its focus on the New York craft beer scene. Don’t worry, there will still be plenty of national content, and plenty of reports from the road (including Utah this weekend).

We’ve also added comments for those not on Tumblr.

Hope you enjoy the new, clean, simple look. We’ll be making other improvements soon!

I’m heading to Utah tomorrow for a few days of snow and sun.

If I needed a reason to despise the arcane alcohol laws of Utah, the picture above is proof: it’s one of the only states west of the Mississippi where you won’t find any beers from New Belgium. Considering I’m slightly obsessed with New Belgium, I’m a little erked that I’ll be within a couple hundred miles of Fort Collins and still won’t be able to get my hands on Fat Tire, Ranger IPA, Abbey, or their spring seasonal Mighty Arrow.

On the bright side, Deschutes distributes to Utah, and it looks possible that I could wrangle a terribly overpriced bottle of 2009 The Abyss out of the hands of the state of Utah, or at the very least a six-pack of the Mirror Pond Pale Ale or Black Butte Porter.

Another regional favorite of mine that I had a fling with two years ago on a trip to Jackson Hole is Big Sky’s Moose Drool brown ale, which is fun to drink for the name alone (to be fair, their IPA is better, but its name just isn’t nearly as fun).

As for actual Utah-brewed beer, I’m going to try to get my hands on Red Rock’s Rêve, check out the brewpubs of Squatters and Wasatch in Park City, and seek out anything rare from Uinta that I can’t already get at Whole Foods.

I’m also catching up on Mike Riedel’s excellent Utah Beer Blog. Any other tips?
