Greetings from Park City, Utah, where I’m looking out onto snowcapped peaks and majestic valleys. It’s a bit too early to have a beer in my hand, but keep watching here for updates on my quest to find good beer in Utah (yes, it exists).
Meanwhile, I’ll be jealous of a few goings-on in New York City this weekend. Standings is holding its Stone Brewing Co. Extravaganza tonight starting at 6, pouring five brews from the San Diego brewery, including Ruination, Levitation, and Vertical Epic 09.09.09, a spicy Belgian porter that will get better with age. As with every Standings event, there will be free food, of course… in this case, lots of pizza to soak up the booze in Stone’s big beers.
For those looking for a good day trip, Dive Bar on the Upper West Side is having a little field trip to Captain Lawrence Brewing in Pleasantville on Saturday. It’s called Kegs-N-Eggs, and it kicks off with breakfast at the bar, followed by a bus trip up to the Westchester brewery that’s put out some great brews lately, including their latest batch of Rosso e Marone, a killer American sour ale that’s aged in oak barrels.
If you can’t make it up to Pleasantville (or the Upper West Side, for that matter), you can still grab a pour of Captain Lawrence’s Captain’s Reserve Imperial IPA, a big beer with a nearly overpowering citrus hop mouth. It’s on draft at The Pony Bar and Lucky Dog right now. At 9% ABV, sip conservatively.
Do you like malt? There’s some big malty beers out there, and among my favorites is one that’s typically found in cans: Oskar Blues Old Chub, a Scottish Strong Ale that packs big roasted malt flavors with chocolate, toffee, and dried dark fruits. For some reason, it reminds me of drinking out of my dad’s old liquor cabinet. For a taste of this beer without the glaring looks from people quietly (and wrongly) judging you for drinking out of a can, go for Old Chub on draft. They’re pouring it now at David Copperfield’s on the Upper East Side.
If you’re a big Dogfish Head fan and missed Hop Devil Grill’s event last night, you can still head there this weekend for the leftovers: they’re still pouring Black and Blue, Burton Baton, and Worldwide Stout along with the old standards: the 60 and 90 Minute IPAs and Shelter Pale Ale. Get ‘em before they’re gone.
All right, I’m about to venture down to Squatters Pub for lunch. Happy drinking, have a great weekend, and save a few brews for me!
