What’s on tap: the beers you’ll be drinking in NYC this holiday weekend

One way to enjoy the long weekend: celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden in Astoria and enjoy their Czech and Slovak Festival

It’s time for our weekly wrap-up of good beer on tap in the city. And since this is the unofficial start of summer, what better theme than summer beers?

We’ll start at the Whole Foods Bowery Beer Room, where NYC newcomer Greenport Harbor Brewing Company is serving up their Summer Ale in 32 and 64-ounce growlers, which are perfect for toting along to a cookout. Whole Foods also has Geary’s Summer Ale and Troegs Sunshine Pils to-go. Hot tip: bring several growlers to a cookout and you’re instantly the life of the party.

If light, crisp summer beers aren’t your thing, meet Sixpoint’s newest entry, a barleywine called Old Krusher. It starts popping up this weekend, and is on tap right now at Brooklyn's Fourth Avenue Pub. You can expect this one to pack a punch at 10% ABV.

If you’re looking for a spot to sit outside this weekend, you can always head to the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden in Astoria, where the Czech and Slovak Festival is going on all weekend with Czech food, raffles, and performances. The Beer Garden, by the way, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Don’t miss the perogies and the pan-roasted duck to complement the awesome beer selection that they expanded last year to include some solid American microbrews from Captain Lawrence, Blue Point, and Ommegang.

Have a great holiday weekend. We’ll be back here next week with a bit of a tan and a full stomach.

Twelve bars earn Good Beer Seal

image
Jimmy Carbone of Jimmy’s No. 43 shows off the mayor’s Good Beer Month proclamation, held by Garry Gillis of Standings and Burp Castle at last night’s Good Beer Seal induction ceremony at d.b.a. Williamsburg

Last night, a packed house at d.b.a Williamsburg celebrated the induction of new bars into the Good Beer Seal program. The Good Beer Seal was created by Jimmy Carbone (of Jimmy’s No. 43), Garry Gillis (of Standings and Burp Castle), and Ray Deter (of d.b.a.) to recognize good beer bars in New York City. Among the criteria:

1. Have 80% craft domestic or special imported beers.

2. Serve a good portion of their beers via a draft beer and/or cask ale program

3. Maintain a strong “Pub” vibe as a nice, local place to drink a beer and visit with friends.

4. Active community presence, as well as being an independently operated establishment

5. Good beer should be a strong feature if not THE FOCUS of the operation

Naturally, a lot of bars are starting to meet these criteria, so last night twelve bars from all across the five boroughs were recognized in a rowdy ceremony that followed a lot of free food and free draft beer. Among the inductees:

Bronx Ale House
Sunswick 35/35
Luckydog
The Brazen Head
Waterfront Ale House
Rebar
- Mug’s Ale House
Pacific Standard
124 Rabbit Club
George Keeley
Rattle-N-Hum
Swift Hibernian Lounge

In addition to the Good Beer Seal program, Jimmy Carbone also made a point to promote July as Good Beer Month, which will be packed with events as last year and accompanied by a proclamation by Mayor Bloomberg to make it official. Among the events: a Good Beer event at Brooklyn’s BAM, and Meatopia - a BBQ event on Governor’s Island on July 11th with an impressive roster of chefs.

As the weather heats up, so does the New York beer scene.

Hot Tips, Cold Beer

image
The view at Union Station Brewery, Providence, Rhode Island, a stop on my weekend trip through New England.

Every day, we get tips from people who have found good beer all over the city. Here’s a few of those tips. And if you’ve found good beer or know of a good beer event, let us know by e-mailing brewyorknewyork [at] gmail dot com.

- Reader Mike was at Rebar in DUMBO on Friday and was pleasantly surprised to see Goose Island Bourbon County Stout on draft. “They said they get a keg every 2 months or so," he tells us. "It was, of course, absolutely gorgeous. And they had Kwak on draft too.” Rebar has a pretty extensive bottle list to boot.

- Reader Melissa scolded me for not mentioning The Pony Bar’s Maine Event over the weekend. Every beer on tap this weekend was brewed in Maine, with beers from Gritty McDuff’s, Sebago, Allagash, Geary’s, Peak Organic, and Shipyard. They also served lobster rolls. I’m only telling you this so I remember to mention it next time something like this comes around. If you go tonight, a few of the leftovers might still be on tap.

- The guys up at Bronx Ale House are planning a field trip down to Philadelphia on June 5th for the International Great Beer Expo, and you’re invited. $75 will get you round-trip bus transportation and a VIP ticket to the beer festival. On top of that, they’ll be making a pit stop at a beer store in Pennsylvania so you can stock up on some of the beer you can’t get in New York. More details on how to RSVP are on their site.

- Reader Joe kindly reminded me about the crazy good draft list for tonight’s Mikkeller event at Rattle-N-Hum. Among them, twelve of the Danish import's Single Hop IPAs, Beer Geek Breakfast, Jackie Brown, and Black Hole Imperial Stout. They’re already starting to pour them as we speak, so get there!

- Speaking of field trips and Rattle-N-Hum, they're taking reservations for a trip to the Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton, Delaware on July 10th. $100 includes transportation, beer, food, and a t-shirt - and a tour led by Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione. You can sign up at the bar. It’s well-worth the $100… and the 7am departure time.

What’s on tap: the beers you’ll be drinking in NYC this weekend

Whoa. It’s been a few days since I’ve shared any pertinent information on New York’s beer scene. That’s what happens during American Craft Beer Week, I guess. The entire nation was peppered with great beer events these past few days. The highlight had to be a mind-blowing event at Brouwer’s Cafe in Seattle on Tuesday, which featured brewmaster-created burgers from Five Guys Burgers and Fries paired with rare beers. (Dear New York Craft Beer Week: please use this event as inspiration in September.) Meanwhile, I slugged down a few great beers from Smuttynose at The Pony Bar and chatted with their brewmaster David Yarrington while visions of Allagash-soaked cheese on a burger danced in my head.

Speaking of Smuttynose and The Pony Bar, there’s still a boatload of their beer on tap from their event on Tuesday night, including the delicious and rich Oak-Aged Imperial Stout and the inventive Brett & I, a funky Belgian strong ale made with one of my favorite yeasts - Brettanomyces.

Over in New Jersey tonight, The Iron Monkey in Jersey City will be celebrating the release of the beers from New Jersey’s newest brewery, New Jersey Beer Company (how many times can you use the word “Jersey” in one sentence?). They’ll be pouring the delicious and refreshing Hudson Pale Ale and all their other brews. Oh, did I mention they have a rooftop and it’s 80 degrees outside right now? I didn’t? Well, I hope that gives you enough reason to go. And if you’re whining that it’s in New Jersey, it’s a two-block walk from the Exchange Place PATH station - the first stop in Jersey on the WTC to Newark trains. You have no excuses now. The fun starts at 6pm tonight!

Brooklyn Brewery had their launch party on Wednesday for their two newest brews: Buzz Bomb Ale, a Braggott made with wildflower honey and orange peel, and the triumphant return of Sorachi Ace, an awesome single-hop brew that has a lemony flavor that’s perfect for the summer. You’ll likely find them on tap at the Brewery this weekend, which is open for happy hour on Friday night, then for tours on Saturday and Sunday. If you’ve never been to the brewery before, it’s worth the trip for good beer and good company. Plus, you can check out the blueprints on the back wall for the brewery’s expansion.

Enjoy the weekend, and be sure to raise your glasses to American Craft Beer Week!
