Good Beer Month Update: Day 12

We’re dealing with a meat hangover today from Meatopia, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any good beer around. After all, it’s Good Beer Month. And tomorrow, that will be official, as Mayor Bloomberg signs a proclamation making it so. Jimmy’s No. 43 will celebrate by pouring Sixpoint Signal, the beer brewed for Good Beer Month that made its debut yesterday at Meatopia.

As far as Good Beer Month events go, it’s a quiet Monday. d.b.a. in the East Village is serving up free cheese plates, as they do every Monday. Waterfront Ale House in Brooklyn is still dedicating their taps to New York State beer, and Swift is continuing their tribute to Pretty Things for the month by pouring their saison, Jack D'Or.

Now, let me go back to digesting all that meat… and there will be a full report later tonight.

What’s On Tap: beers to have this weekend in NYC

image

Whatever. They’re still here, despite the California ABC’s attempts to shut ‘em down.

It’s World Cup Finals weekend, so nearly everyone and their mother will be packing into bars across the city. But if you can make your way through the crowds, there’s some great beer being served up.

Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale has been making the rounds in the city. It’s a painfully bitter but somewhat dark brew that’s an homage to a small bump in the road of the history of Lagunitas Brewing Company. In 2005, the California Alcohol Beverage Control had undercover officers stake out their brewery for eight weeks while they threw parties on the brewery floor. After trying to bust them on charges that never stuck - underaged drinking, giving away beer for free - the ABC caught a few people smokin’ doobies (if you’ve been to Northern California, this should not surprise you) and shut down the brewery under a pre-prohibition law of “running a disorderly house.” The shut-down happened on St. Patrick’s Day… which the brewery refers to as the St. Patrick’s Day Massacre. After a 20-day shutdown (which gave them time to install a bottling line), Lagunitas was back up and running, and as the label of the beer states, “whatever. We’re still here.” You can sip a glass of history this weekend at Fourth Avenue Pub and Washington Commons in Brooklyn, The Pony Bar in Manhattan, or in growlers up in Westchester at DeCicco’s Market in Ardsley.

There’s not much I can say about what’s happening at Blind Tiger Ale House on Saturday, because there’s not much I know. However, manager Alan Jestice has informed us that their owner, Dave Broderick, is coming down from Vermont with a few goodies (no, not the kind of goodies that got Lagunitas busted). What I do know is that in the meantime, they’ve still got some leftovers from their Summertime Blues event on Wednesday, including the Weyerbacher Blasphemy '06 and Dogfish Head Sahtea. Plus, they’ve got the Kelso Saison, the newest offering from their brewery in Fort Greene.

Finally, are you going to Meatopia? If not, you’re going to miss out on Sixpoint Signal, a special-edition beer that will be hard to come by otherwise. The brewery and the founders of Good Beer Month collaborated on this smoked helles beer that will be served up on Governors Island on Sunday. If you don’t want to miss Meatopia, there are still tickets available until 5pm on Saturday. If you do miss it, you have a second chance to catch it at some Good Beer Seal bars while supplies last next week.

Good Beer Month Update: Day 6

There’s plenty of great beer to be had today in New York - lots of rare stuff, and too much to try all of it. But you’ll at least get your hands on some of it if you make it out to these Good Beer Month events today:

  • Bar Great Harry in Brooklyn is having a Bear Republic Sour Patch event starting at 6pm tonight, which serves up a bevy of sour beers, including Sour Crazy Ivan, Nectarine Barrel-Aged Grizz, and Prickly Pear Barrel-Aged Grizz.
  • Rattle-N-Hum is calling today’s unveiling of a bunch of unique and sometimes hard-to-find beers the "Cool Sh#t Event.“ Among the beers served up today are six beers from Quebec’s Unibroue, six beers from Norway’s Nogne, four offerings from Quebec’s Dieu Du Ciel, and four brews from Michigan’s Jolly Pumpkin.
  • Jimmy’s No. 43 is holding the next event in their 10 Buck Tasting series. This week, it’s Founders Brewing. You can sample their brews tongiht at 7:30pm.

Don’t forget to grab your Good Beer Month Pub Crawl Card. If you visit all 27 Good Beer Seal bars in July, you’ll get a special edition t-shirt.
