Whatever. They’re still here, despite the California ABC’s attempts to shut ‘em down.
It’s World Cup Finals weekend, so nearly everyone and their mother will be packing into bars across the city. But if you can make your way through the crowds, there’s some great beer being served up.
Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale has been making the rounds in the city. It’s a painfully bitter but somewhat dark brew that’s an homage to a small bump in the road of the history of Lagunitas Brewing Company. In 2005, the California Alcohol Beverage Control had undercover officers stake out their brewery for eight weeks while they threw parties on the brewery floor. After trying to bust them on charges that never stuck - underaged drinking, giving away beer for free - the ABC caught a few people smokin’ doobies (if you’ve been to Northern California, this should not surprise you) and shut down the brewery under a pre-prohibition law of “running a disorderly house.” The shut-down happened on St. Patrick’s Day… which the brewery refers to as the St. Patrick’s Day Massacre. After a 20-day shutdown (which gave them time to install a bottling line), Lagunitas was back up and running, and as the label of the beer states, “whatever. We’re still here.” You can sip a glass of history this weekend at Fourth Avenue Pub and Washington Commons in Brooklyn, The Pony Bar in Manhattan, or in growlers up in Westchester at DeCicco’s Market in Ardsley.
There’s not much I can say about what’s happening at Blind Tiger Ale House on Saturday, because there’s not much I know. However, manager Alan Jestice has informed us that their owner, Dave Broderick, is coming down from Vermont with a few goodies (no, not the kind of goodies that got Lagunitas busted). What I do know is that in the meantime, they’ve still got some leftovers from their Summertime Blues event on Wednesday, including the Weyerbacher Blasphemy '06 and Dogfish Head Sahtea. Plus, they’ve got the Kelso Saison, the newest offering from their brewery in Fort Greene.
Finally, are you going to Meatopia? If not, you’re going to miss out on Sixpoint Signal, a special-edition beer that will be hard to come by otherwise. The brewery and the founders of Good Beer Month collaborated on this smoked helles beer that will be served up on Governors Island on Sunday. If you don’t want to miss Meatopia, there are still tickets available until 5pm on Saturday. If you do miss it, you have a second chance to catch it at some Good Beer Seal bars while supplies last next week.
