Happy Hour: Da Cubs. Da Bears. Da Beer.

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • It’s Great Divide Night at David Copperfield’s (1394 York Ave. at 74th St., Upper East Side). Starting at 7, they’ll be pouring an exceptional list of beers from the Colorado-based brewery, including the 16th Anniversary Wood-Aged Double IPA, both the Chocolate and Espresso Oak-Aged Yeti, and a cask-conditioned Belgica.
  • Standings (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) is having their Chicagoland Blowout tonight. With the Cubs on at 4pm and the White Sox playing at 8pm, there’s no better excuse to break out five beers from Chicago's Goose Island, including Sofie, White City, Summer, and - of course - Bourbon County Stout. To wash it all down (and soak up the alcohol), they’ll serve free pizza at 8pm.

Harlem’s Bier International opens tonight

image

It’s been months in the making, but Bier International will pull away the plywood and open tonight at 7pm, serving mainly European beers in a communal beer-hall environment. The bar, located on Frederick Douglass Blvd. between 113th and 114th, will have nine beers on tap to start, plus a bottle list that spans the globe from Germany to Kenya and Japan to Long Island. Here’s the draft list:

Hofbrau Original
Weihenstephan
Reissdorf Koelsch
Erdinger Dunkel
Duvel Green
Jenlain Ambree
Krusovice
Fuller’s London Pride
Sixpoint Sweet Action

For those folks who think they’ll have to pack a bag for the night going this far uptown, relax. It’s a quick walk from the B/C at 110th-Cathedral or 116th Street.

Whole Foods launches homebrewing competition

image
The newly-added grain selection in the Whole Foods Bowery Beer Room. They also have a grain mill on site.

On the heels of its new homebrewing department, the Whole Foods Bowery Beer Room kicks off their Local Homebrew Hero contest in less than two weeks. Beginning August 23rd, customers will be able to submit their homebrews (in four bottles) for judging. The winning brew will be brewed at Kelso of Brooklyn and served at Good Beer Seal bars across the city and at Whole Foods. On top of that, the winner gets $300 worth of homebrew equipment. (The runner-up wins $200 of equipment, and third place gets $100 worth.)

The contest runs through September 17th, so if you brew now, you can have something ready for submission before the deadline.

I’ll be brewing this weekend for this very reason, in fact. Unfortunately, my last two brews are both a bit over the 7% ABV limit. What can I say? I like big beers.

To get all the contest guidelines, read the contest rules and entry form [PDF].
