Happy Hour: From Brooklyn to Queens faster than the G Train

It’s Thirsty Thursday! Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • Brooklyn’s Sixpoint Craft Ales will be on hand in Queens tonight at Sunswick 35/35 (35-02 35th St., at 35th Ave., Astoria), pouring a bevy of their beer on the cheap. Starting at 8pm, they’ll have seven taps of Sixpoint, including Gorilla Warfare, Old Krusher Barleywine, and Double Sweet Action. Plus, they’ll all be $1 off.
  • When I find out about beer events, I don’t think they’ll be at places like a local technie hangout, but Tom & Jerry’s 288 Bar (288 Elizabeth St., at Houston St., Noho) is hosting Fire Island Beer Company tonight from 7-9 with half-price pints of their Lighthouse Ale and Red Wagon IPA. You might feel a bit closer to the shore, but keep in mind that the beer you’re drinking is brewed upstate in Saratoga. (It’ll be our little secret.)

In September, New York will Get Real

image

After months in the making, the stage is set for New York’s largest cask beer festival ever, and it’ll pair great beer and local food in a beautiful landmark building.

On September 25th and 26th (at the beginning of New York Craft Beer Week), Get Real New York will be held at Chelsea’s Altman Building. On the docket: 80 casks of beer from around the world, as well as food from 20 different New York restaurants. The lineup is still being finalized, but with a panel of experts from Rattle-N-Hum, Ale Street News, Gotham Imbiber, and the Malted Barley Appreciation Society choosing the beers, it’s undoubtedly going to be good.

Tickets went on sale today, and are available at Eventbrite for $65 (or $80 for a VIP session). There are four three-hour sessions over that weekend, and with a very clear cap on the number of tickets for each session, you can guarantee you won’t spend much of that time waiting in lines for beer or food.

Happy Hour: Bring me all the finest meats and cheeses

Not to be repetitive, but here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • It’s Allagash Night tonight at 6pm at The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay). Among the six taps, they’ll be pouring Victor, Victoria, and Four, plus a nice spread of meats and cheeses to pair with those delicious Maine beers.
  • Saranac and Lake Placid will be at the Whole Foods Bowery Beer Room (95 E. Houston St., at Chrystie St., Lower East Side) tonight for a tasting starting at 5pm. They’ll be pouring those beers from the taps, so growler fills are welcome and encouraged.
  • Down in Brooklyn, it’s Ballast Point Night at The Double Windsor (215 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace), with $5 pours of some great west coast beers from 7-11pm. They’ll have six beers on tap from the San Diego brewery. The big question: will they have the Sculpin IPA? You bet your sweet behind they will!

Happy Hour: Taste some homebrew at Union Hall

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • I was busy homebrewing on Sunday, so it’s only fitting that I mention tonight’s Knights of Bruklyn Homebrewer’s Sentry Homebrewing Competition tonight at Union Hall (702 Union St. at 5th Ave., Park Slope). While the brewers’ spots were taken months ago, you can taste the homebrews in the contest for free tonight while snacking on cheese from Stinky Bklyn. The sampling and judging get underway at 7pm upstairs.
  • Rattle-N-Hum will also have beer and cheese as part of their 12% Imports and Stillwater Showcase today starting at 3pm. In addition to a selection of Belgian imported beers, they’ll also pour brews from Stillwater, an artisanal brewery in Baltimore, including the Stateside and Of Love and Regret saisons and Cellar Door, a farmhouse ale. Cheese from Murray’s Cheese will also be served starting at 5pm.
  • Last but certainly not least, we won’t say how old he is, but Jimmy Carbone of Jimmy’s No. 43 is having a birthday celebration tonight at his spot in the East Village. They’re promising “one hell of a party,” with tons of local craft beer, plus some sour and wild ales… which happen to be the subject of their weekly Ten Buck Tasting series tonight at 7:30pm.

Last Call: What’s going on in NYC this weekend

image
If the forecasters are right, the sun will shine strong on Astoria’s Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden this weekend.

The weather looks quite lovely this weekend, so it’s a great opportunity to do some outdoor drinking. Here are some outdoor spots that offer good beer and a chance to catch some rays.

In Brooklyn, Sycamore (1118 Cortelyou Rd., at Westminster Rd., Kensington) likely offers the most classic of summer traditions: beer and food cooked outside over a grill. Every Saturday afternoon, the bar/flower shop in Kensington pairs up with a brewery to serve hamburgers, hot dogs, and a selection of craft beer in the back garden. This Saturday, it’s Illinois’ Two Brothers that’s the featured brewery, and pints are $5. The grilling runs from 2-8pm.

In Manhattan, a small but comfortable outdoor space exists on the East Side at The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay). Head upstairs from the bar, and there’s a roof garden with picnic tables squeezed between the dense residential high-rises. There’s a great beer selection to complement the fresh air, including the Belgian-inspired Green Flash Le Freak, the cherry-laced Founder’s Cerise, and Pretty Things Baby Tree, a quadrupel brewed with dried plums.

The ultimate, often-imitated, but unmatched outdoor drinking experience in New York is at Queens’ Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden (29-19 24th Ave., at 29th St., Astoria). While best known for its copious amounts of European beer, this 100-year old shrine to beer has dedicated tap space to local microbrews lately, including Captain Lawrence Freshchester Pale Ale, Sixpoint Sweet Action, and Blue Point Summer Ale.

Of course, if you feel like avoiding the crowds, you can always go for a spot closer to home, like your roof or fire escape, and opt for whatever your favorite beer store has to offer. Regardless of where you end up this weekend, soak up the sun quickly… before the crisp summer ales give way to Oktoberfest beers.
