Happy Hour: Halloween Weekend

Here are the beer-related goings-on this weekend:

  • Brouwerij Lane (78 Greenpoint Ave., at Franklin St., Greenpoint) is having a Wacky Wet Hop Weekend, serving up drafts and growler pours of Founders Wet Hopped Harvest Ale, Rogue Chatoe First Growth Wet Hop, and Harpoon 100 Barrel Glacier Wet Hop all weekend long. They’ll also have some pumpkin beers on Halloween, naturally.
  • The soft opening of the Village Pourhouse Hoboken (205 First St., Garden St., Hoboken) is tonight. They’ll open their doors at 8pm. While the draft list seems to suggest catering to the fist-pumping, binge-drinking crowd, the Pourhouse’s bottled beer menu includes some bright spots like Blue Point Old Howling Bastard, Ommegang Three Philosophers, and Flying Fish Hopfish IPA.
  • Where The Wild Beers Are, a celebration of wild and sour beers, is tomorrow from 12-4pm at Mission Dolores (249 4th Ave., at Carroll St., Park Slope). Register online, then show up with a sour or wild beer, pay a fee, and get to sample the beers that others brought.

There are two other events this weekend with fancy posters after the jump:

Meet The Brewhaha

This is a clip from a new show from the minds of Rob Serrini and Jamie Ward called The Brewhaha. It’s a new New York-based web show that dissects beer in a fun and light-hearted manner.

Is it scientific? No. Is it educational? Maybe in the way How I Met Your Mother is an educational program about living in New York. Is it a show for beer snobs? Absolutely not. But is it a charming and occasionally hysterical show that puts beer front and center? You bet your sweet ass it is.

The full pilot episode is available on Vimeo, and check out the show’s web site for more details and updates.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday Edition

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • It’s Kelso night at Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg), celebrating the Brooklyn-based brewery with an impressive tap list, including Chocolate Lager, IPA, their new Pale Ale, and a two-year aged Flemish Red.
  • Clipper City Brewing takes over the taps all day today at the Copper Mine Pub (323 Ridge Rd., at Crystal St., North Arlington, NJ) with the beers from their Heavy Seas line, including Big DIPA, Loose Cannon IPA, and their rauchbier Smoke on the Water. No need to hum Deep Purple.
  • It’s a BIG IPA day at The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope). Starting at 7pm, they’ll pour nine big IPAs, including ones from Troegs, Avery, and Founder’s. There’s a cask from Smuttynose, too… their Clubbed Seal. Tasteless? Probably. Tasty? Definitely. While you’re in Park Slope, head over to a Captain Lawrence tap takeover at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope).
  • Tons of fall beers tonight at 7pm at David Copperfield’s (1394 York Ave., at 74th St., Upper East Side), as they celebrate their second annual Pumpkin Night with Cape Ann Fisherman’s Imperial Pumpkin Stout, Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin, Captain Lawrence Pumpkin Ale, and many more on tap.
  • On Staten Island, The Wild Goose (530 Forest Ave., at Davis Ave., Staten Island) pays homage to our favorite New York-based canned beers from Butternuts tonight at 7pm, with $3 cans of Porkslap, Snapperhead IPA, Heinnieweisse, and Moo Thunder Stout.

Barrier Brewing brewing holiday beer for UWS Dive Bars

image

If you ever need an excuse to head to the Upper West Side, you already have one in the chain of three bars that make up the Dive Bar chain. They carry an extensive selection of craft beer, offer growler fills, and host regular appearances from brewers and brewery reps at their 75th, Amsterdam Ave., and Broadway locations.

One brewer who visited Dive Bar at Amsterdam and 96th during NY Craft Beer Week was Evan Klein of the up-and-coming Barrier Brewing Co. in Oceanside, Long Island. He carted out five of his brews in one of the first events in Manhattan where you could try his entire brewery portfolio at once.

But that’s not all that Barrier has up its sleeve for the Dive Bars. Later this month, they’ll be delivering the Dive Bar Christmas Ale, an exclusive holiday beer only available on the Upper West Side. This is one special beer. It’s an American Strong Ale (clocking in at 9% ABV) brewed with cinnamon, nutmug, maple syrup, and what Klein calls “a boatload of hops.” Four additions of hops will help bring the beer to a tounge-numbing 100 IBUs. You can be pretty certain that this beer won’t be your mother’s winter warmer.

Klein says to expect it on tap in late November. If you have some sort of fear of going above 59th Street, this gives you plenty of time to gather your altitude sickness medications.

Happy Hour: Vermont to California

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight, moving from East to West:

  • It’s McNeill’s Night at The Double Windsor (210 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace) starting at 7pm, serving up $4 pints of Pullmans Porter, Warlord Double IPA, and the new Sunshine IPA, plus some others.
  • Michigan’s Kuhnhenn Brewery is front and center at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) starting at 4pm, with 16 taps including Loonie Kuhnie (an American Pale Ale), Olde Brune (a sour beer), and the world premiere of their black double IPA, Hooded Knight.
  • It’s a week-long event, but it’s worth noting that Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) is serving an impressive selection of beers from California-based Moylan’s all week, including their Moylander Double IPA, Kilt Lifter Scotch Ale, and Ryan O'Sullivan’s Imperial Stout.

Happy Hour: Harpoon at The Pony

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • This week’s $10 Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) is called Hoppy Halloween. Starting at 7:30, for just $10, you can taste six hoppy beers, including Two Brothers Heavy Handed IPA and Allagash Hugh Malone.
  • Harpoon takes over the taps at The Pony Bar (637 10th Ave. at 45th St., Hell’s Kitchen) tonight starting at 6pm. Among the rarities on tap, an oak-aged Leviathan Series Imperial IPA, Uncle Fester (a blend of Oktoberfest and Munich dark brewed with brettanomyces yeast), and the 100 Barrel Series Glacier Wet Hop (brewed the same day the hops were harvested).
