Good Beer up and running; giving away tix to taping of “Brewmasters”

image

While  Good Beer (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A) is already in its soft opening phase, its official Grand Opening celebration is this Saturday. And if you’re a fan of Dogfish Head, of their brewer Sam Calagione, or of his upcoming Discovery Channel show Brewmasters, it’s well worth your time to make it to Good Beer on Saturday.

That’s because with every purchase on Saturday, you’ll be entered into a raffle for a chance to attend a taping of a segment of Brewmasters, where Sam will be releasing a beer inspired by an ancient Egyptian recipe on November 19th at the Discovery Exhibition in Times Square (where, coincidentally, they’re displaying ancient Egyptian artifacts).

If that’s not enticing enough, perhaps the beer selection can impress you. If you’re looking for an American craft beer here, and it’s sold in New York State, they probably have it in a bottle, and at reasonable prices (by the bottle or the six-pack). If it’s on tap, you can grab a pint for just $6, a sampler of 4 beers for $8, or a full growler to go for $9-13. The snacks that accompany the beer are tasty, too, and if you’re standing around the large counter space here sipping a beer, odds are you’ll end up striking up conversation about craft beer with a total stranger (beer is the great equalizer, you know). If you’ve got a craft beer newbie in tow, the employees are apt to make good recommendations, too.

You might think we’re a little too excited, since Brew York, New York HQ is just three blocks away from this spot (and there will probably never be an empty growler in our kitchen again), but the excitement is justified. Good Beer is definitely worth a visit.

Happy Hour: You and the Captain make it happen

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • Tonight from 6-9pm, The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay) hosts Captain Lawrence and their brewer Scott Vaccaro. They’ll be free passed appetizers and plenty of beers from Westchester’s finest brewery on tap, including St. Vincent’s Dubbel, Pumpkin Ale, and their Imperial Smoked Porter.
  • It’s Wednesday, and this week, Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) brings Allagash into the house starting at 4pm. Expect some favorites and surprises from the Maine brewery, including their Blonde, Victor, Victoria, and this year’s edition of Curieux.
  • It’s Stoudts Night at Amity Hall (80 W. 3rd St., at Thompson St., Greenwich Village) starting at 6pm, with a bunch of beers from the Pennsylvania-based brewery.

With La Birreria, the waiting is the hardest part

Eataly does have an excellent beer selection, but when will beer be brewed there?

Back in February, news broke of an Italian/American collaborative brewpub on the roof of Eataly that would be run in part by Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione. The project was called La Birreria, and it would open over the summer.

Then Eataly got closer to completion, and it seemed obvious that progress was slow up on the roof. So a more vague completion date of the fall became a less vague but more distant completion date of mid-November. Then, last month, it became clear that November was a pipe dream, and Zagat reported the new date as “January or February.”

Well, revise your calendars again: Beernews.org is reporting that the new opening date is now sometime in March. The good news? They’re also reporting that the rooftop beer garden will be covered, so we can expect a year-round, rain-or-shine operation.

Now we play the waiting game.

Happy Hour: Everybody must get Stoned

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • Don’t forget about tonight’s Brew York, New York-sponsored trivia night at Destination (210 Avenue A, at 13th St., East Village) starting at 8pm. We’ll have lots of great prizes, and plenty of questions to stimulate a mind polluted by a little bit of alcohol.
  • This week’s Ten Buck Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) salutes a darker shade of beer: porters. For $10, you’ll be walked through a tasting of six different porters, including Greenport Harbor Duck Porter, Victory Baltic Porter, and the Hunter S. Thompson-inspired Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter.
  • Okay, so it’s no Total Tap Takeover, but the tonight starting at 6pm at The Pony Bar (637 10th Ave. at 45th St., Hell’s Kitchen), San Diego’s finest brewery, Stone, will take over the taps. In addition to serving the West Coast-style of IPA they popularized, Stone is bringing some great stuff, including the Stone/Kelsey McNair/Ballast Point San Diego County Session Ale, the Smoked Porter with Chipotle Peppers, their barleywine Old Guardian, and their impeccable Imperial Russian Stout.

Brew York, New York presents Trivia Night tonight at Destination

image

It’s shameless self-promotion, but tonight at 8pm, we’re sponsoring trivia (hosted by your dear editor) at Destination (210 Avenue A, at 13th St., East Village). S.K.I. Beer is our co-sponsor, offering up tons of fun prizes like beer glassware and real, actual beer to take home.

And while not a craft beer bar, Destination did just add Peak Organic Nut Brown Ale to their tap list - a great brown ale to keep you warm as the weather gets cold.

So, bring yourself, bring a team, and bring your thinking caps. We’ll see you tonight at 8!

Happy Hour: For when the SAD is kicking in

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work on this first night with a sunset before 5pm:

  • Up at Birdsall House (970 Main St., at Division St., Peekskill), it’s a Kelso of Brooklyn night with Kelso’s brewmaster Kelly Taylor serving as special guest starting at 6pm. Among the beers he’ll be bringing up are St. Gowanus, the Flemish Red, and a very special gravity keg.
  • On Long Island, celebrate the release of Blue Point’s new Brown Beaver Pilsner at Bobbique (70 W. Main St., at Railroad Ave., Patchogue) tonight at 7pm. The beer is a re-creation of last year’s winner of the Brewers’ East End Revival Brewers Cup, and it’ll be available in pints for just $4.
