Happy Hour: Thirsty Tuesday

There’s a lot going down tonight. Call it Thirsty Tuesday. Here are the beer-related goings-on after work:

  • First and foremost, Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) hosts a 30th Anniversary celebration for Sierra Nevada all night tonight, with 44 beers, including four casks. Some you’ve seen before, and some you’ll never see again. We showed you some of the list earlier this month. You won’t want to miss this.
  • Over at The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope), San Francisco’s 21st Amendment comes to town with their full lineup starting at 7pm. You’ll be able to throw back their Fireside Chat, Hop Crisis, and summertime favorite Watermelon Wheat - this time, without the cans.
  • There’s a lot of winter beer stored in the back of Idle Hands (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village) for their Winter Warmer Christmas Party tonight starting at 7pm (their Hanukkah Party, by the way, is tomorrow night). They’ll offer $1 off all winter beers they serve, like Peak Organic Winter Session and Fire Island Frozen Tail. Plus, they’ll throw in some cupcakes from The Land of Cake Believe to celebrate the season.
  • Yeast is beer’s best friend. Without it, we have no alcohol. And with different strains of yeast come very different flavors. Tonight at 7:30 at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village), it’s another ten buck tasting focusing on different yeast strains. $10 gets you six tastings of beers from Mikkeller, Lagunitas, and more.

A Beer Geek’s Holiday Wish List

image

Black Friday is over. Cyber Monday has passed. And you haven’t begun gift shopping yet. Take a deep breath - now that the holidays are upon us (literally, as Hanukkah begins tomorrow night), it’s time to share some gift ideas for the beer geeks among us.

Naturally, there’s nothing a beer geek likes to do more than drink beer. For that, there are plenty of simple options like gift certificates to your favorite beer bars or stores. Blind Tiger, Jimmy’s No. 43, and Hop Devil Grill have been known to offer gift certificates. There are tons of other bars out there that may be willing to do the same - just ask! And as for retail stores, Whole Foods (whose New York locations nearly all sport take-away growlers), the newly-opened Good Beer NYC and Eastern District offer gift cards or certificates that are perfect for the thirsty beer geek. You could also go by mail with a membership to the Beer of the Month Club - which offers your choice of domestic, international, and rare beers.

If you think that giving a beer geek beer for the holidays is a little too obvious, there are plenty of other options. For one, you could give them apparel from their favorite brewery. In the case of Brooklyn Brewery, their newly-updated online store offers a stylish fitted “B” cap, a t-shirt that demonstrates the brewing process, and a coffee mug that lets you boast of your love of beer even first thing in the morning. If the beer geek in your life likes beer and good design, this poster or t-shirt from Pop Chart Lab entitled “The Many Varieties of Beer” will turn his or her beer geek friends green with envy.

For the budding homebrewer in your life, Brooklyn Brew Shop, purveyor of those famous one-gallon homebrew starter kits, sells holiday gift sets, and just started offering e-gift cards as well.

Of course, the simplest way to please beer geeks is with a bottle or few of their favorite beers. Not sure which beers those are? Ask them when they’re good and drunk - they’ll never remember that you asked!

Happy Hour: Chow Down

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • Spring Lounge (48 Spring St., at Mulberry St., Little Italy) is pairing 21st Amendment brews with food in their first of a series of beer dinners. Tonight at 6pm, get some free food to pair with Fireside Chat, their winter beer. Specifically, they’ll serve short ribs braised in that very beer, with sweet potato hash and brussel sprout slaw on the side. The food comes courtesy of chef Jeff Maslanka of Black Shack Burger and 67 Burger.
  • The Double Windsor (210 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace) holds their monthly trivia night tonight from 9-11pm. The first-place team wins a ten-beer bar tab - not too shabby for craft beer fans, especially since they’re pouring Heavy Seas Loose Cannon IPA, Kuhnhenn Hooded Knight, and Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale right now.

Win tickets to Saturday’s Battle of the Belgians!

image

On Friday, we told you about the Battle of the Belgians at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village), a five-hour marathon of Belgian-style beers and food that starts at noon this Saturday. The event pits American-brewed Belgian-style beers against the real deal from Belgium. Only one will come out victorious.

You, too, could come out victorious this week, as it’s time to win some tickets to the event!

If you’d like to be entered to win a pair of tickets, simply e-mail us at brewyorknewyork [at] gmail.com with the subject line: Battle and your name in the body. We’ll draw the winner randomly from the entries on Thursday.

One entry per person, please. Nobody likes a cheater. Especially when there’s free beer at stake.

Get your fill of beer at two events next Saturday

Hopefully, you did plenty of Black Friday shopping (I sure did) and can go back to focusing on immersing yourself in beer next Saturday, December 4th. There are two events not worth missing. The biggest problem is choosing just one.

First, if you’ve never homebrewed in New York City, you probably wonder how people do it. I somehow manage in a kitchen that can barely fit three people, and plenty of others do it, too. Now, thanks to beer journalist Joshua M. Bernstein, you can be inspired by the stories of homebrewers across New York City with his New York City Homebrew Tour next Saturday at 1pm. Bernstein will be your guide as you make stops at apartments across the city and observe homebrewers as make their craft, and sample the many varieties of brews they’ve made. If you’ve homebrewed before and wonder how others do it, if you have an interest in homebrewing and are wondering how to get started, or if you’re just curious to sample others’ homebrews, this event is for you. The tour is $25 and you can buy tickets online at Brown Paper Tickets.

If you’re more interested in one variety of beer, perhaps Jimmy’s No. 43 might be more up your alley. Belgian-style beers are the focus of an impressive event that starts at high noon on Saturday: The Battle of the Belgians. You’ll be able to sample nearly three dozen different Belgian-style beers from both American craft brewers and the real deal brewers across the Pond. And don’t forget the three Cs to pair with it: cheese, charcuterie, and chocolate. If you’re a big fan of Belgian beers, like to pair your beer with food, or just love the warm vibe of Jimmy’s awesome subterranean space, this event is for you. Tickets for this five-hour epic event are $60 through Beer Menus from now through next Friday (you can also check out the full beer list there as well).

Take your pick. When there’s beer, you really can’t lose.

Happy Hour: Get Your Sixpoint, Greenport Harbor On

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • At Bar Great Harry (280 Smith St., at Sackett St., Carroll Gardens), it’s their annual Sixpoint night from 6-10pm, with an impressive tap and cask list. Grab some Dr. Klankenstein, Double Sweet Action, Missionary IPA (from Pacific Standard’s anniversary party), or an Oyster Stout from a very special cask.
  • Hop on over to Park Slope for Greenport Harbor night at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope). They’ll have free tastings of the North Fork’s finest libations starting at 7pm, including their fall seasonal Leaf Pile, Hopnami IPA, and their new barleywine called Anti-Freeze.
  • Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) hosts Vanberg & Dewulf, the American importers of some of Belgium’s finest breweries, today starting at 4pm. They’ll have selections from Scaldis and Dupont, best known for its namesake saison, but also maker of several other intriguing Farmhouse Ales and Belgian Strong Ales.
