Brooklyn Brewery honors expansion with new Brewmaster’s Reserve Series offering

image

As we teased last week, the expansion of Brooklyn Brewery’s space in Williamsburg is complete, and to christen the new brewing system last week, brewmaster Garrett Oliver and his team brewed up the brewery’s newest beer, Main Engine Start.

It’s another addition to the brewery’s Brewmaster’s Reserve Series, and like the others, it’ll be draft-only. Beernews.org reports that it’s a Belgian-style Abbey Single, dry-hopped with Slovenian Aurora hops and clocking in at 6.2% ABV.

The expansion of the brewery will also bring opportunities to brew some of the brewery’s beers more often. Norman Miller reports that Sorachi Ace will become a year-round offering thanks to the new space. Oliver told us last fall that we can also expect to see larger batches of these one-off Brewmaster’s Reserve Series beers, not only to increase availability here in New York, but also to distribute to places that previously saw only Brooklyn’s standard beer lineup.

The full ribbon cutting of the space will be in February. For some details on the space and some pictures while construction was in progress, take a look at our report from last September.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • Ommegang is serving up samples of its beers tonight from 5-9pm at Whole Foods Bowery Beer Room (95 E. Houston St., at Chrystie St., Lower East Side). Among those you can taste will be their Chocolate Indulgence, Three Philosophers, and their BPA.
  • It’s a Sierra Nevada tap takeover at Brooklyn’s Bierkraft (191 5th Ave., at Berkeley Pl., Park Slope). Starting at 7, they’ll have nearly a dozen beers from Chico, California available, including Charlie, Fred and Ken’s Hellesbock, their Porter, and a firkin of the Northern Hemisphere Harvest.
  • Up in Westchester, The Peekskill Brewery (55 Hudson Ave., at Railroad Ave., Peekskill) taps a cask of their Vanilla Bourbon Stout fermented in Tuthilltown Spirits bourbon barrels starting at 3:30 this afternoon. Get it while it’s hot! Or, in the case of a cask… cool.
  • Head across the Hudson for an Avery Extravangaza tonight at Copper Mine Pub (323 Ridge Rd., at Crystal St., North Arlington, NJ) starting at 6pm. Vito’s put together an impressive tap list including IPAs DuganA and Maharaja, plus Old Jubilation and The Czar Imperial Stout.

Captain Lawrence 5 Years Later to release in Mid-February

image

We mentioned last week that Pleasantville’s Captain Lawrence Brewing Company received label approval on a fifth anniversary beer. Now, we know that it’ll be releasing in Mid-February, according to the latest missive from brewer Scott Vaccaro. No exact date has been offered for its release, but the beer will be sold in 750mL bottles for $15 a piece.

Also from Scott, new batches of Golden Delicious and Nor'easter will be available in the coming weeks. For those unfamiliar, Scott says the Nor'easter is a “strong dark Belgian influenced ale is fermented with elderberries and aged in bourbon barrels.” This will be their fifth brewing of their winter seasonal.

All of the above beers will be available wherever fine beers are sold in the New York area. We’ll keep you updated on exact dates for their release at the brewery.

Other bits of news from the brewery: their tasting room in Pleasantville has added Thursday hours from 4-7pm, and they’ll again be participating the sixth annual Sausage and Beer (and Grains) Dinner on Sunday, January 30th at Blue Hills at Stone Barn (630 Bedford Rd., Pocantico Hills) in Westchester. It’s a huge celebration of local beer and local food at a pricey but well-worthwhile $195 per person.
