LI’s Blind Bat appearing on taps, shelves in NYC

image

Beers from another Long Island brewery have quietly started to pop up in New York City over the past couple of months. Blind Bat Brewery, based in Centerport on the North Shore of Long Island, is appearing around the city on draft and in bottles. Blind Bat is a small-batch (now up to 3 barrel - or 90 gallon - batches), one-man (that man being Paul Dlugokencky) brewery that specializes in beers made with wood-smoked malt, but also offers some other unique styles.

Blind Bat has been spotted on tap recently at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village), The Ginger Man (11 E. 36th St., at 5th Ave., Midtown), in Brooklyn at Moonshine (317 Columbia St., at Woodhull St., Carroll Gardens), and in Westchester at Blue Hill at Stone Barns (630 Bedford Rd., Pocantico Hills) . They’ve also been delivering their 16-ounce bottles to New Beer Distributors (167 Chrystie St., at Rivington St., Lower East Side) since December. Among the offerings they’ve brought to the city are the Hellsmoke Porter, a rich, chocolatey dark brew with English pale malt smoked over alder and applewood, and the even more unique Long Island Potato Stout, a dry stout that uses organically-grown local potatoes in the mash.

And yes, this is a labor of love: Paul smokes the malt and peels, boils, and mashes the potatoes himself.

It’s always good to have another option on the taps at New York’s beer bars, and it’s even better when it’s local. Keep an eye out for these two brews, and some lighter-bodied options as the weather warms up this summer.

Sixpoint takes the taps at Barcade tonight

image

Last week, while visiting San Francisco, I accused a friend of being “a Deschutes fanboy.” He seems unwilling to go a day without any beer from the famed Oregon brewery in his fridge, and about half of the stuff he’s cellaring is from that brewery.

“Oh, come on,” he said. “It’s not like you’re not a fanboy of a brewery or two.”

“No, I’m not.” Then I paused, and realized I may had mistaken myself. “Okay, maybe I’m a Sixpoint fanb-.”

“You’re totally a Sixpoint fanboy,” my friend snapped back. “Every time I come to New York, it’s all you want me to drink!”

So now, it’s out there. But I swear that my apparent loyalty to a certain Red Hook-based brewery has nothing to do with dedicating this particular post to one event hosted by said brewery. It’s just a pretty awesome event.

Tonight, starting at 5pm, Sixpoint Craft Ales takes over every single tap at Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg), with an impressive list of beers that will leave fans of the brewery’s heads spinning.

There will be some rarities, some classics, some long-lost beers, and a chance to get your hands on two of their newest beers - the Mad Scientist Series #2 Berserker Bock (brewed with Stumptown Coffee) and the Time Out New York/Sixpoint collaboration Time Out for a Porter (served on cask). The full list - 24 long, with some omissions that will be filled in tonight - is after the jump:

Happy Hour: The Full Vermonty

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • It’s the annual Vermont Beer & Cheese Festival at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) starting today at 4pm. They’ll be pouring beers from tons of Vermont breweries, including Hill Farmstead and many others that we are not at liberty to name. And there will be cheese, too… from Vermont, of course.
  • If you need your fix of hops tonight in the form of one of the East Coast’s best West Coast-style beer, Mudville 9 (126 Chambers St., at W. Broadway, Tribeca) is giving away free Nugget Nectar from 6-8pm tonight as part of their Troegs Brewery Night.
  • Over in Brooklyn, there’s a Blue Point tasting tonight at Keg & Lantern (95 Nassau Ave., at Manhattan Ave., Greenpoint) from 7-10pm, with Toasted Lager, RastafaRye, Hoptical Illusion, and others all on tap as part of their Blue Point Month.

Idle Hands gets hands-on with beer

image

Since opening last year, Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village) has flown a bit under the radar, despite boasting an impressive selection of draft and bottled craft beer. But the subterranean hard rock-themed bar has gotten a bit more attention with their own badge on Untappd, and a new series of beer tastings that gives the place even more craft beer cred.

The series is called Learning to Beer, and it kicked off last week with a tasting from Blue Point. Every Wednesday night from 7-9pm, brewery representatives - and sometimes the brewers themselves - will guide you through a two-hour tasting of the brewery’s offerings and answer questions about the beers. Naturally, appetizers will be served to soak up two hours’ worth of boozing, and there will be some sweet swag to take home, too.

Tonight, Idle Hands teams up for a tasting with Brewery Ommegang and Duvel. The tasting starts at 7pm, and each event is $35 in advance through Beermenus, or $40 at the event.

It doesn’t end there. There’s a full lineup of these events through June. Check out who else will be pouring after the jump:

  • This week’s Ten Buck Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) salutes Imperial beers. For $10, you’ll be walked through a tasting of six big beers, including White Birch Dubbel, Green Flash Imperial IPA, and Nectar Ales Black Xantus.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • It’s Victory Night at Standings (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) tonight starting at 6pm. They’ll be pouring the St. Victorious doppelbock, the Belgian-style Tripel that’s ever-popular for #gettngslizzerd - Golden Monkey, and assorted others in draft and bottle form. And if you’re hungry, they’ll have free bratwursts from Wechsler’s.
  • If you’re more interested in paying for your food, Peak Organic has a good deal goin’ at Whitmans (406 E. 9th St., at 1st Ave., East Village) tonight: from 9-11pm, get three 10-ounce pours of their beers (IPA, Nut Brown, and Simcoe Spring) and a grass-fed burger for $20.
  • Left Hand takes over the taps tonight at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) at 7pm. Expect some good stuff from the Colorado-based brewery for pints and growler fills.
  • If you’re in Jersey, you’d be making a huge mistake if you missed the Jolly Pumpkin night at Copper Mine Pub (323 Ridge Rd., at Crystal St., North Arlington, NJ) today starting at 3pm. They’ll have a pretty awesome lineup of 7 beers including Es Bam, Oro de Calabaza, and Luciernaga. Might we remind you that these beers don’t contain pumpkin, which an unfortunate patron at Pony Bar learned the hard way recently after her first sip of the La Roja, an American wild ale (a painfully sour beer for the uninitiated).
