Happy Hour: Beyond Brewers for Brewers

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • As we’ve mentioned, the Brewers for Brewers fundraiser to help earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan is tonight at Brooklyn Brewery (79 N. 11th St., at Wythe Ave., Williamsburg). As of this moment, will-call tickets - for $50 - are still available at Brown Paper Tickets.
  • If you’re looking for a pre- or post-game plan for Brewers for Brewers, head to Spuyten Duyvil (350 Metropolitan Ave., at Havermeyer St., Williamsburg) starting at 6pm as they host Quebec’s Hopfenstark brewery and a bunch of saisons, as well as an oak-aged Frambroise Forte.
  • Spring Lounge (48 Spring St., at Mulberry St., Little Italy) will pair Greenport Harbor’s brews with food at a beer dinner tonight at 6pm. Don’t think it’s formal - the food is free! They’ll have the Rye Saison and Belgian IPA to go along with an Escarole Salad and Italian Sausage, plus a Blue Cheese and Fig Panini to pair with their Triton Barleywine.
  • For the freeloaders out there, Midtown newcomer The Three Monkeys (236 W. 54th St., at Broadway, Midtown) has a Harpoon event tonight, with free samples of Munich Dark, Summer Ale, and the new version of the 100 Barrel Series Island Creek Oyster Stout. And because you’re tired of drinking out of plastic cups, there will be free glassware to give away, too.
  • Finally, give your brain a workout and get the chance to win free beer (10 of them, to be precise, for the winner) at The Double Windsor’s (210 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace) monthly trivia night tonight at 9pm.

Wake-Up Call: the weekend in beer

image

Good morning! It’s Monday, and we’re all plugging through the recovery from our weekend hangover with the news that Chicago’s Goose Island is being acquired by Anheuser-Busch/InBev.

This news isn’t entirely surprising. After all, Anheuser-Busch already had a 5-year old minority stake in Goose Island that grew their footprint to practically nationwide. And in that time, the quality of the beer didn’t degrade. But some craft beer drinkers are already in a huff over this - assuming an A-B buyout will mean a change in recipe to use cheaper ingredients. So far, the brewery says they’ll use the same facilities they always have. We don’t know what will pan out after the sale, and until we do, we’ll withhold judgment on what becomes of Goose lsland.

What are your thoughts? Does this spell impending doom for a great craft brewer? Will you still drink beer whose profits end up in the hands of the Great Beer Satan? Let us know in the comments.

Meanwhile… over at the Bell House in Brooklyn on Saturday, hundreds gathered for Beer for Beasts, a festival put together by the folks at Beer Advocate and Sixpoint Craft Ales to benefit the ASPCA.

The reviews were mainly positive. Beer Advocate knows how to put on a good festival, so the lines weren’t intolerable, the crowds weren’t packed to the gills, and the beer - all small-batch stuff brewed by Sixpoint - was delicious. There were only two major complaints: one, that some of the beers ran out pretty quickly into each session - was controllable. The other - that Mother Nature was uncooperative - was uncontrollable. Robert Sietsema of the Village Voice said it was a bit too cold to stand outside for the food. But why eat outside with all the beer to drink inside?

Some pretty big events are on tap for this week - starting most importantly with tonight’s Brewers for Brewers. Brooklyn Brewery will play host to the festival featuring local beers and food to benefit earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan. Tickets are still available at Brown Paper Tickets.

Long-awaited Eataly rooftop brewpub looking at May opening

image

We’ve said before that when it comes to the Dogfish Head/Baladin/Birra del Borgo collaboration brewpub on the roof of Eataly (200 Fifth Ave., at 23rd St., Flatiron), the waiting is the hardest part. The delays have really piled on. When it was first announced over a year ago, we expected a late summer opening last year. Then, it became November, January, and then March. Well, it’s late March, and we’re still waiting, but we’re pretty sure that the wait won’t be much longer.

Eater is reporting that the brewpub, La Birreria, is hiring staff and could be open in “about a month.” The deck, the retractable roof, and the brewing equipment - which was hoisted onto the roof by a crane - are now in place for the 300-seat garden. Via Twitter, Dogfish Head said they’re “hoping” for a May opening, which is the first they’ve really hinted at an opening date, so we’ll stick with that projection for now.

Of course, there’s always that dastardly permitting and final inspection and approval, and despite the fact that there’s already a full liquor license approved by the Community Board for the rooftop, anything can and will go wrong in a city that seems hell-bent on making it as difficult as possible to open a place where people drink alcohol. So, stay tuned.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • It’s Midwest Beer Night at Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg) tonight starting at 5pm, with plenty of surprises from flyover country. You’ll see stuff from Founders, Kuhnhenn, Nebraska, Goose Island (did someone say Bourbon County Stout?), and many, many more.
  • Dive Bar (732 Amsterdam Ave., at 96th St., Upper West Side) will host a visit from Syracuse’s Empire Brewing Company tonight starting at 7pm. ‘Cuse may be out of the tournament, but you can drown your sorrows over your busted bracket with their Cream Ale and six other brews.
  • The tap takeover series at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) brings 14 beers on tap from Bear Republic tonight starting at 7pm. Grab some Pete Brown Tribute Ale, Apex, Ryevalry, and many others… including some tasty oak-aged goodies.

A second Duane Reade adds growler fills

image
A peek at the new Brew York City bar at Duane Reade (via kbanks on Twitter)

We’ve already seen Duane Reade bring growler fills to their Bedford Ave. location in Williamsburg, but now their “Brew York City” (really, we’re flattered) empire has a new location at Broadway and 72nd Street on the Upper West Side.

Just like in Brooklyn, all growler fills at $7.99 and they offer a wide variety of micro and macro brews, from Founders Dirty Bastard to Dos Equis, plus local beers from Sixpoint, Blue Point, and Brooklyn. Their full menu is updated regularly on Beermenus.

While the beer menu won’t blow away New York’s biggest beer geeks, Brew York City is offering affordable local craft beer to the masses. Heck, there are bars in New York that charge nearly the same price for a pint of beer. The Bedford Ave. location in Brooklyn has become a site for special tastings hosted by local brewers, and has been very supportive of local brewers by giving them great visibility. Hopefully, we’ll see the same on the Upper West Side… and in the near future at other Duane Reade locations around the city.

Happy Hour: not your Averyday affair

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • Avery is front and center at The Pony Bar (637 10th Ave. at 45th St., Hell’s Kitchen) tonight starting at 6pm. They’ll have the 17th Anniversary, The Kaiser, The Maharaja, and many more on tap from the Boulder, Colorado brewery that doesn’t opt for marijuana references.
  • You can get smutty tonight at Good Beer NYC (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A), as Smuttynose has a tasting of four of their brews, like Big A IPA and Vunderbahr Pils. If you’re extra special, they might throw in a barleywine, too.
