Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work on National Beer Day:

  • Celebrate the new Bronck’s Beer Company tonight at 7pm with their launch event at Bronx Ale House (216 W. 238th St., at Broadway, Kingsbridge, Bronx). They’re just getting off the ground and will soon be contract brewing Upstate. Taste their Pelham Bay IPA and Woodlawn Weiss and celebrate with glassware and Yankees ticket giveaways.
  • The Pony Bar (637 10th Ave. at 45th St., Hell’s Kitchen) dedicates ten of its taps to Nantucket’s Cisco Brewers tonight starting at 6pm. There’s a lot of hard-to-find stuff coming their way, from favorites like Whale’s Tale Pale Ale to beers from their barrel-aged The Woods series. Then, when you’re done, create a limerick with the opening line, “there once was a beer from Nantucket…”
  • It’s Captain Lawrence Night at Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg) starting at 8pm. Founder Scott Vaccaro will be on hand, and they’ll have a ton of rarities from Westchester, including Five Years Later, their fifth anniversary beer, the Imperial Smoked Porter, and a rare cask of their Raspberry Sour ale blend.
  • Brooklyn Brewery, the target of my unfortunate April Fools joke, pulls out all the stops tonight at The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope). Starting at 7pm, they’ll tap Detonation, Dark Matter, Monster Ale, and a cask of the East India Pale Ale. Plus, they’ll have bottles of the rare and delicious Black Ops.
  • The Half-Pint (76 W. 3rd St., at Thompson St., Greenwich Village) celebrates the arrival of spring with their “The Beers of Spring” event tonight from 6-9. They’ll be tapping Blue Point Spring Fling, Magic Hat Vinyl, Ommegang Hennepin, and even more spring seasonals that go down easy on a cool spring day.
  • It’s the annual Dogfish Head Springfest tonight at 6pm at Standings (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village).  They’ll have Namaste, Aprihop, and Bitches Brew, along with - naturally - free pizza at 8pm.
  • Then, head downstairs to Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) for Pickles & Beer starting at 5pm, as Rick’s Picks celebrates its 7th anniversary. They’ll have fried pickles and $5 pints of local beers from Sixpoint, Barrier, and Ommegang.

Happy Hour: Old and Strong

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) salutes the Strong Ales tonight with an event running all night, featuring some tasty big aged beers like a 2009 North Coast Old Stock Ale, the 2008 vintage of Victory Old Horizontal, and a 2007 Brooklyn Monster Ale. Plus, they’ll have a defunct beer from a defunct brewery: the 2008 Pennichuck Barrel-Aged Barleywine. How’s that for a blast from the past?
  • Get Smutty at The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay)  tonight from 6-9pm, as Smuttynose takes over the taps, with brews like the Vunderbar Pilsner, Summer Weizen, and more. To boot, they’ll have free New England Clam Chowdah to commemorate the event.

Happy Hour: You Gno Who

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • BXL East (210 E. 51st St., at 3rd Ave., Midtown East) plays host to the New York City launch of Gnomegang, the collaboration between Cooperstown’s Brewery Ommegang and Belgium’s Brasserie d’Achouffe tonight at 6pm. It’s a collaborative Belgian Strong Pale Ale clocking in at 9.5% ABV.
  • The Knights of Bruklyn Homebrewing Competition is center stage at Union Hall (702 Union St. at 5th Ave., Park Slope) tonight at 7pm. Sample over a dozen different homebrews and vote for your favorite, and enjoy cheese from Stinky Bklyn and homemade beef jerky.
  • The free Tuesday Tasting series at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) features a relative newcomer to the New York craft beer scene: Breckenridge Brewery (which is actually based in Denver, Colorado). The tasting starts at 7pm, but you might want to rush over there earlier, as they just got another shipment of bottles of Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout.
  • Ulysses’ Folk House (58 Stone St., at Pearl St., Financial District) kicks off their April IPA Month - a celebration of the American IPA - tonight from 5-7pm. Expect to see IPAs from Lagunitas, Smuttynose, and Stone.

April Sours bring May _______

I actually sat and stewed over a clever headline for about an hour last night, but nothing came to mind. Feel free to fill in the blank in the comments, because I’m fresh out of ideas.

What’s not to love about sour beers? Okay, so maybe they can wreck your taste buds for days. Okay, so maybe you couldn’t get your swill-drinking friends to come within ten feet of a glass of a Gueze. Okay, so sour beers are an acquired taste. But if you like them, you’re going to want to be at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) on Saturday afternoon, April 16th for their April Sours event.

The event will offer unlimited pours of dozens of sour beers and food to pair with the beers. Among the breweries represented will be Cantillon, Hanssens, and De Ranke from Belgium, Hopfenstark from Quebec, Bayerischer Bahnhof from Germany, and several sours from American craft breweries like Jolly Pumpkin, Allagash, The Bruery, and Long Island’s Blind Bat.

Food will include whole ham legs from Jimmy’s No.43, pickles from Rick’s Picks, charcuterie from The Piggery, sausage and kielbasa from East Village Meat Market, and chocolate from Roni Sue.

Tickets are $60 and are well worth the cost - you eat and drink your weight, for crying out loud. You can buy tickets online from BeerMenus.

Happy Hour: Get canned

It’s a quiet Monday night, but here’s one the beer-related event after work tonight:

  • The weekly “Liquids of Interest” tasting series at d.b.a. Brooklyn (113 N. 7th St., at Berry St., Williamsburg) features canned beers tonight at 7pm. Get a free tasting of beers from Sly Fox, Butternuts, and Oskar Blues as Michael Lovullo walks you through his specially-curated selections.

Brooklyn Brewery announces small-batch brewery tours

And now, some REAL news about a brewery in Brooklyn.

Okay, okay. We’ve had our April Fools’ Day fun and unleashed a prank that may have - admittedly - sounded a bit too real to get a laugh out of everyone. And honestly, the fact that people took the prank so seriously goes to show you that we in the craft beer community have some real concerns about the future of the industry. The Goose Island news was a little too close for comfort. Even though they already had an existing relationship with a macrobrewer, we hate to see these strange bedfellows and we fear this trend of the Goliaths buying the Davids could get worse.

But, relax. Brooklyn Brewery isn’t going anywhere. Trust me. Go tonight, have a beer or two to unwind from your paranoia, and see that it’s still the same old place it ever was. Except it’s not, because thanks to its expansion last fall, it’s bigger, has more room to brew, and more space for small, specially-curated tours.

That’s where their new offering comes in. Small-batch brewery tours kick off on weeknights starting next week and offer a chance for a special tour experience. Monday through Thursday at 5pm, the tour will begin with a special guided tasting of four Brooklyn beers, then moves on to a full 30 to 45 minute tour of their newly-expanded Williamsburg brewery (79 N. 11th St., at Wythe Ave., Williamsburg), and an opportunity to buy pints and souvenirs afterwards.

The new tours - which are $8 per person - will be more personal than their weekend tours; they’re limited to 25 people per tour and are by reservation only (details on how to book are on the Brewery’s website). If you want to get to know their beers a little bit better, this is a great tour for you. If you’re a tourist or a lifelong New Yorker, as long as you’re a fan of beer (and over the age of 21), this is an opportunity to get some facetime with the brewery and some tasty beers to boot.
