Happy Hour: A Dead Guy Ale, perhaps?

While nobody is exploiting a recent death with a special on Rogue Dead Guy Ale, here’s an after-work beer event or two tonight:

  • Brewery Ommegang is at The Three Monkeys (236 W. 54th St., at Broadway, Midtown) tonight from 6-9pm, with six tap lines dedicated to the Upstate brewers of fine Belgian libations. They’re promising free giveaways and tastings galore.
  • Bier International (2099 Frederick Douglass Blvd., at 113th St., Harlem) celebrates spring with a tasting of Jenlain Printemps, the French-brewed Biere de Mars, tonight from 6-8pm.

Oceanside’s Barrier wins Best in New York at TAP NY

Barrier’s Evan Klein and Craig Frymark celebrate their victory this weekend at Hunter Mountain

Over the weekend, breweries from all across the state converged at Hunter Mountain for the annual TAP New York festival. During the competition, awards are presented to the top beers and breweries, and one local brewery walked away very happy.

On Saturday, Barrier Brewing, the brainchild of former Sixpoint man Evan Klein, took the honors of Best Craft Beer Brewery in New York State. The award’s namesake is F.X. Matt, founder of the West End Brewing Company in Utica that today still produces brands like Saranac and Utica Club as F.X. Matt Brewing Company.

We salute Barrier for making New York proud!

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • It’s Smuttynose night at Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg) tonight starting at 5pm, with 11 of the finest taps to come out of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, including their Smuttonator doppelbock, Wheat Wine, and a cask of the Big A IPA.
  • It’s Farmhouse Ale Night at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) tonight starting at 7pm, as they salute beers in the Franco-Belgian tradition. Enjoy offerings like Pretty Things Jack D'or, Sixpoint Harbinger Saison, and the Greenport Harbor Spring Saison on tap and pray the rain stops so you can enjoy it in their new back garden.
  • Sierra Nevada is at The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) tonight at 7pm, with beers like Jack & Ken’s 30th Anniversary Barleywine, Glissade, a 2007 vintage Bigfoot Barleywine, and the first beer from Sierra’s Ovila series of beers brewed by Monks in a Northern California monastery.
  • Across the river in Jersey, the Copper Mine Pub (323 Ridge Rd., at Crystal St., North Arlington, NJ) is doing a little spring cleaning all night long, pouring the last of some cold-weather favorites like 21st Amendment Monks Blood, River Horse Belgian Freeze, Yard’s Love Stout, and a bourbon barrel-aged Flying Fish Exit 13.

A free beer for your vote

image

No, this isn’t some sort of news story about awful voter fraud. But Heartland Brewery is giving you a coupon for a free beer (with food purchase) if you vote for your favorite Heartland beer in their poll on the brewpub chain’s Facebook page.

They’ll post the coupon for the winning beer on their Facebook page when the first beer hits 150 votes. We’re pulling for the Red Rooster Ale, personally.

And while we’re on the subject of Heartland, brewmaster Kelly Taylor is working on a gluten-free beer to add to their lineup to complement their gluten-free food menu at their Midtown West location (625 8th Ave., at 41st St., Port Authority Bus Terminal). In addition, they’ve rolled out their Kolsch and Orange Thyme Pale Ale - an American Pale Ale with citrusy hops, a mild malt background and, yes, thyme - for the warmer weather.

Happy Hour: I’ve got the Oskar Blues

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • Kuhnhenn Brewery out of Michigan has their biggest-ever event in New York today starting at 4pm at Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown). They’re often hard-to-find in New York to begin with, but the brilliant minds at Rattle will cart out a full 44 beers from them, including a Bourbon Barrel-Aged 4th Dementia Olde Ale, and three versions of their infamously-named Panty Dropper fruit beers.
  • It’s Oskar Blues night tonight at The Pony Bar (637 10th Ave. at 45th St., Hell’s Kitchen) starting at 6pm. Hold the can - these are on draft. Rarities including Hungarian Oaked Old Chub, the dry-hopped Deviant Dale’s, and Old Double Bagger barleywine.
  • This week’s $10 Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) is salutes the beers from importers Vanberg & Dewulf. Starting at 7:30, for just $10, you can taste six imported beers, including Saison Dupont and Hop Ruiter.
  • On the subject of imports, Bierkraft’s (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) Tuesday Night Tasting this week features Denmark’s Evil Twin Brewing, who we’ve written extensively about lately. Check out their impeccable Yang Imperial IPA, which I sampled this weekend. And then mix it with Yin Imperial Stout for a mind-blowing Black and Tan.
  • Get your Long Trail on at Shorty’s (576 Ninth Ave., at 42nd St., Hell’s Kitchen) starting tonight at 5pm. They’ll have their Coffee Stout and Double IPA from their Brewmaster Series, plus the very summery Blackbeary Wheat on tap.
