Happy Hour: You and the Captain make it happen

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

  • If you can’t make it up to Westchester for Captain Lawrence’s Fifth Anniversary Party this Saturday, then head to David Copperfield’s (1394 York Ave., at 74th St., Upper East Side) for a celebration on this side of the Bronx starting tonight at 7pm. They’ll have Xtra Gold, Nor'easter, their fifth anniversary beer - Five Years Later, and more on tap.
  • Victory takes over the taps at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) tonight at 7pm. Enjoy over a dozen brews from PA, including Old Horizontal barleywine, All-Malt Lager, and the Headwaters Pale Ale.
  • A couple blocks away, Sixpoint has eight beers on tap tonight at Mission Delores (249 4th Ave. at Carroll St., Park Slope) as part of an event celebrating the release of the book To Timbuktu by authors Casey Scieszka and Steven Weinberg. On tap, they’ll have Gemini double IPA, Otis Stout on nitro, and the new Mad Scientists #3. The whole thing gets underway at 7:30pm.
  • Speaking of books, local author and beer journalist John Holl and his partner-in-crime Nate Schweber will be signing copies of their book Indiana Breweries tonight from 6-9pm at Traffic Bar (986 Second Ave., at 52nd St., Turtle Bay), which happens to be New York’s official University of Indiana bar.
  • The weekly happy hour Beer and Oyster event at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) features Two Brothers tonight from 5-7pm. It’s a pay-as-you-go event with fresh oysters shucked by their renown shucker Eddie.
  • Over in Jersey, enjoy the rooftop and beer from Smuttynose at The Iron Monkey (97 Greene St., at York St., Jersey City, NJ). It’s the first of their “summer brewery nights on the rooftop,” and they’ll pour Vunderbahr Pilsner, Big A IPA, Wheat Wine, and more starting at 6pm.

Tooting our own horn: our upcoming events

image

We’re not all about tooting our own horns, usually. But since our editor Chris O'Leary mentioned it on this week’s episode of Beer Sessions Radio, we can’t resist telling you about a great opportunity to enjoy some delicious, refreshing beers at two events that we’re a part of in the next month or so.

First, next Thursday night at 6:30pm, you can gear up for summer at 92Y Tribeca (200 Hudson St., at Canal St., Tribeca) with Summer Suds: A Craft Beer Tasting. Chris will take you through a tasting of summer seasonals and snacks that’ll get your mouth watering. We’ll be pouring crisp, refreshing beers from breweries like Brooklyn Brewery, Ommegang, Lagunitas, and more. You don’t need to be a 92Y member… just click on over and purchase tickets online for just $25.

Then, on Wednesday, June 15th at 7pm, we’ll partner with Tapped Craft Beer Events for an organic food and beer pairing at Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village). We’ll have Peak Organic on-site to help guide you through a tasting of four delicious beers and four organic snacks. For $35 ($40 on the day of the event), you’ll get a one-hour curated tasting of beers, food, collectible items from the brewery, and then full pours of two refreshing organic brews. You can buy tickets for this event through BeerMenus.

We hope you can join us!

Sierra Nevada Torpedo comes to New York tap lines

image

You’ve probably seen the above beer in bottles on beer store shelves in New York City plenty of times before. But, you’ve probably never seen it on draft. That’s all about to change. This weekend, Sierra Nevada will roll out their Torpedo Extra IPA on tap at select bars and restaurants in New York City, one of only three cities where you’ll find it on the East Coast. It’ll be available throughout the summer.

For the uninitiated, Sierra Nevada describes Torpedo as “bold, assertive and full of flavor and aromas highlighting the complex citrus, pine and herbal character of whole-cone American hops.” It’s a true West Coast hop bomb from the West Coast’s most widely-known brewery.

After the jump, the full list of spots in the five boroughs where you’ll be able to find Torpedo on draft starting this weekend:
