Happy Hour: I’ve got the blues

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work in and around New York tonight:

  • Anderson Valley takes over the taps tonight at Brouwerij Lane (78 Greenpoint Ave., at Franklin St., Greenpoint) from 6-9pm. Meet brewery owner Trey White, and enjoy Hop Ottin IPA, Summer Solstice, Brother David’s Tripel, and more.
  • Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) salutes Colorado Beers with their weekly $10 Tasting tonight at 7:30. Sample beers from both Oskar Blues and relative newcomer to the New York beer scene, Breckenridge.
  • Speaking of Oskar Blues, they join Two Brothers tonight for the cleverly-named “Blues Brothers and Beer” at The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay) starting at 6pm. Enjoy five beers from each brewery on tap, free soul food, and a screening of The Blues Brothers.
  • Greenport Harbor is at Good Beer (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A, East Village) tonight from 6:30-9pm, with some great Long Island beer, and discounts on pints and growler fills.
  • Over in New Jersey, Cloverleaf Tavern (395 Bloomfield Ave., at Hanford Pl, Caldwell) is tapping a rare cask of Flying Fish Abbey Dubbel today at 4pm. This bad boy is barrel-aged in Jack Daniels barrels, and there are only 18 casks of it in existence, so get it while you can.

NY Times doesn’t know what a “beer garden” is, either

image
Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden is a real beer garden, but many of its imitators are not.

Yet another media source in New York has fallen victim to a mistaken definition of “beer garden.” As we’ve noted before, just because you can drink beer outside doesn’t make a place a beer garden. In addition, just because a bar has a German theme and serves German beer doesn’t make it a beer garden. In an article yesterday, the New York Times either didn’t bother researching the definition of a beer garden, or ignored the definition to write a phony “trend piece.”

By definition, a beer garden (taken from the German “biergarten”) is a ground-level, open-air space where beer and food are served. The concept actually originated as Bavarian breweries planted gardens above cellars to keep their lagers cool enough to ferment underground. More entrepreneurial breweries turned these spaces into outdoor spaces with communal seating that serve beer and traditional food.

Based on that definition, here are the fifteen places that the Times mentioned in their article, and which ones are actually beer gardens.

Harlem Tavern hiring staff, eyeing a June opening

image
A view of construction in progress at the Harlem Tavern (via Facebook)

While we’ve been talking up quite a few new beer bars this Spring, we’ve noticed that our friends Uptown hasn’t been getting much attention. That’s about to change when Harlem Tavern (301 W. 116th St., at Frederick Douglass Blvd., Harlem) opens next month.

The space, in an old auto repair shop, will include a large beer garden (and yes, this is really a garden) where a parking lot once stood and a roomy interior with high ceilings. The menu will be traditional American food, and the beer will flow from over 20 taps, a mix of craft, American, and imported brews. It may not precisely be a craft beer bar, but it will have craft beer options, and who doesn’t enjoy drinking outside, right?

Tomorrow, Harlem Tavern is holding a job fair, hiring for all positions, so we know that the official opening can’t be that far off. We’ll keep you updated on when we hear more.

Your first glimpse inside Eataly’s La Birreria

image

Almost a year and a half after the first announcement, La Birreria at Eataly (200 Fifth Ave., at 23rd St., Flatiron), the brewpub on the roof of Eataly, is almost here. The official opening date: June 3rd. Today, for the first time, we got our first glimpse of the space and a taste of the beer.

image

First, the beer. Head brewer Brooks Carretta, who bit his chops brewing at Italy’s Birra del Borgo and then refined his beers this year in the US at Dogfish Head, introduced us to the first lineup of beers, which are all named for famous Italian women. Each beer blends Italian and American brewing traditions.

First up is Gina, an American Pale Ale brewed with Thyme. Then there’s Wanda, an English Mild brewed with chestnuts. Rounding out the first three beers in the lineup is a yet-to-be-named summer seasonal, an American Wheat Ale brewed with peppercorns chosen by Eataly partners Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich. Gina and Wanda will stay on tap year-round, while the seasonal cask will rotate four times a year. All the house beers will be poured on cask, and will only be available upstairs at the brewpub - they won’t be bottled, and they won’t be available for growler fills.

More beers on tap, and a full tour of the space after the jump…

Happy Hour: Bear with us; we Found these events.

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work in and around New York tonight:

  • Bear Republic is at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) starting at 3pm today, with some well-known California brews like Racer 5 and Hop Rod Rye, but also some rarities like the Carburetor Doppelbock and their latest annual release, End ‘10.
  • Over in Jersey, it’s River Horse night at Andy’s Corner (257 Queen Anne Rd., at Fort Lee Rd., Bogota) starting at 4pm. They’ll have eight taps with Jersey’s finest, including the Hop-a-lot-amus and two special casks of their Special ESB, one oaked with vanilla beans, and another dry-hopped.
  • Founders is two-timing in Brooklyn tonight at 7pm, with dual events at The Double Windsor (210 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace) and The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope). At The Double Windsor, they’ll serve a bunch of venison dishes along with seven beers on tap. Over at The Gate, they’ve got ten brews on tap, including the 2009 Imperial Stout and Kaiser Crumudgeon. And to answer the question that always gets asked: yes, they’ll both be pouring Kentucky Breakfast Stout.
  • We got a chuckle out of the title of tonight’s event at George Keeley (485 Amsterdam Ave., at 83rd St., Upper West Side): it’s called “We Ain’t Feuillien Around.” They’ll celebrate a whole bunch of Belgian beers from Urthel, La Trappe, St. Feuillien and others, all discounted tonight starting at 6pm.
