Three more days to sign up for Heartland’s Homebrew Contest

image

If you think you’ve got what it takes to make a beer that ends up on tap at a New York bar, Heartland Brewery is holding a homebrew contest this summer. You’ll need to sign up by this Friday, July 1st, and submit your beers for judging on August 10th.

A homebrew contest in the middle of the summer? Something tells me there will be a lot of Belgian beers entered.

If you brew in large enough quantities to have 1/6-barrel to share, you can also enter the People’s Choice contest, which will be judged at a ticketed tasting open to the public on August 16th.

A ½-barrel batch of the winner’s beer will be brewed at Heartland’s Brooklyn brewery and served on tap at several Heartland locations across Manhattan. Plus, the winner will get a $100 Heartland gift certificate.

Full details for the contest and how to enter are on their Facebook page. Hurry up! The deadline to enter is on Friday!

Ray Deter, owner of d.b.a., at last year’s Good Beer Seal Awards (via Metromix)

Some disturbing news in the beer community comes via d.b.a., a beer bar with locations in both the East Village and Williamsburg:

We are reaching out to every one of our patrons and friends to please send your prayers and loving energy to Ray Deter at this time.

As some of you may have heard, Ray was in a very serious bicycle accident yesterday and is in critical condition. For those of you who are hearing this for the first time, we are so sorry to share this news in this manner, though we are grateful for the tool to reach many of you.

We’d like to request that you pray for and send your loving healing, thoughts, and energy to Ray for his recovery. And we do ask at this time that you please do NOT visit the hospital, it’s too overwhelming for the family, and they request you keep sending love. Likewise please don’t call the bars right now, it’s too huge to comprehend, everyone is going through a lot.

Your thoughts and love are most appreciated.

According to DNAInfo, the incident happened around 5:30 last night at the intersection of Canal Street and West Broadway.

We’ll relay anymore info when we hear more, and you can follow the d.b.a. Facebook Page for updates. In the meantime, our thoughts and prayers are with our friend Ray and the entire d.b.a. family.
