Pictures from last night’s Second Line for Ray Deter

image

Hundreds of people gathered in front of d.b.a. East Village last night to honor one of the bar’s owners, Ray Deter, who passed away last week. Because of his love of New Orleans, a Second Line March through the East Village was held in his honor. The march wound through the East Village, from d.b.a., it travelled across 3rd Street, down 1st Avenue, across on 2nd Street to Avenue B, and up Avenue B to 6th Street, where Ray lived for many years.

Onlookers won’t forget seeing a jazz band pass through the East Village with scores of people dancing behind them, and we know that it was just the way that Ray would’ve wanted to be remembered.

Sixpoint to can a new fall seasonal beer

image

We called it: Sixpoint Craft Ales’ cans - err, “nano-kegs” - have been the feel-good hit of the summer. We’ve spotted the cans all across the city, sometimes flying off the shelves. Why cans? Well, they’re lighter to transport, 100% protected from light, keep beer fresher, and can go places that bottles can’t. That’s especially helpful during the summertime, where beaches and boats and parks are prime beer-drinking venues.

Well, come fall, Sixpoint has found another way to keep their cans from slipping into hibernation…

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

We aren’t joking when we call it Thirsty Thursday. Hold on tight, here are a bunch of beer-related goings-on after work in and around New York tonight:

  • There are dueling Brooklyn Brewery events on either side of the Hudson River. First, Barcade Jersey City (163 Newark Ave., at Erie St., Jersey City) hosts their first Brooklyn event starting at 5pm, with a vintage 2007 and 2010 Monster Ale, the 2009 and 2010 Black Chocolate Stout, and more.
  • Meanwhile across the river in Manhattan, Standings (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) has five beers on tap from Brooklyn Brewery starting at 6pm, including The Concoction, and free pizza at 8pm.
  • Westchester County’s own Captain Lawrence takes over the taps at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) tonight at 7pm. Brewer Scott Vaccaro will be on hand as they pour Captain’s Reserve, Pleasantville Smoked Porter, Limone Luppolo, and much more on tap, as well as a cask of their Saison.
  • The Iron Monkey (97 Greene St., at York St., Jersey City, NJ) hosts Weyerbacher tonight at 6pm, with the Sixteen anniversary mead, Double Simcoe IPA, Insanity barleywine, and much more.
  • There’s a free tasting of Peak Organic tonight at Whole Foods Bowery Beer Room (95 E. Houston St., at Chrystie St., Lower East Side) from 5-8pm. Enjoy free samples of Weiss Principal (probably my favorite new beer name this year), IPA, and Summer Session.
  • As we mentioned this morning, Jonas Bronck’s rolls out a keg at Yankee Tavern (72 E. 161st St., at Gerard Ave., South Bronx) starting at 5pm today. Catch their debut beer, Woodlawn Weiss, before Jeter makes history at the stadium.

And remember, for more updates, be sure to follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook.

In the Bronx, a new beer arrives

image

Even at a time when craft beer is at its peak, it takes a lot to get a beer brand off the ground. It’s even harder when your first market is the largest one in the country. But after years of planning, there is a new beer brand launching in New York City: Jonas Bronck’s Beer Company. The name honors the founder and namesake of the city’s northernmost borough, and it’s only fitting that the company’s beers are rolling out at bars across the Bronx.

Their first beer, Woodlawn Weiss, is a German Hefeweizen with a large amount of wheat in its malt bill, fermented with a traditional Bavarian Yeast strain. The beer’s name honors one of many Bronx neighborhoods that had large German populations and beer gardens prior to prohibition.

More about where the beer’s brewed, and where to find it, are after the jump…
