Happy Hour: Christmas in July

Need to get out of the heat tonight? Here are the beer-related goings-on after work in and around New York:

  • Starting at 3pm today at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village), it’s Christmas in July. The bar will roll out a bunch of winter seasonal beers, including a 2009 vintage Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, a 2007 vintage Troegs Mad Elf, and to celebrate Hanukkah in July, three vintages of Hebrew Jewbelation.
  • Not to be outdone, Burp Castle (41 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) is celebrating Christmas in July tonight, too. Starting at 6pm, enjoy three Belgian holiday ales on tap: Pietra Noel, Scaldis Noel, and St. Feuillen Noel, plus free Belgian fries from Pommes Frites.
  • If lighter-bodied beers are more your speed today, head to The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay) at 6pm as they sample Saisons from Pretty Things, Ommegang, Sierra Nevada, and more. Plus, they’ll have free flatbreads from 6-8pm.
  • The Double Windsor (210 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace) hosts brewer Brian Strumke and his Stillwater Artisanal Ales tonight at 7pm. Enjoy Stateside, Debutante, and Cellar Door on tap, along with bottles of his Mikkeller collaboration, Our Side.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work in and around New York tonight:

  • Barcade Jersey City (163 Newark Ave., at Erie St., Jersey City) welcomes Epic Brewing from Utah tonight starting at 5pm. Don’t let its state of origin fool you - this is some good beer. Try the Sour Apple Saison, Intermountain Wheat, and Spiral Jetty IPA… all at alcohol levels so high, they’re illegal to put on tap in Utah (of course, that doesn’t take much).
  • Brooklyn Brewery breaks out some good stuff tonight at David Copperfield’s (1394 York Ave., at 74th St., Upper East Side) starting at 7pm. A handful of rare brews from across the East River will be available, including Blast!, The Concoction, and the 2010 Monster Ale. Plus, they might have a few Black Ops bottles kicking around.
  • Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) celebrates beers from the oversized sandbar where you’ll find their bar: Long Island. Tonight at 7pm kicks off Strong Island Beer Night, with brews on tap from Kelso of Brooklyn, Greenport Harbor, Sixpoint, Barrier, and more. Bring some money and your accent!

We’re off on the West Coast for a few days, so site updates might be a bit more sporadic until Wednesday. To follow our travels and to get more info on beer happenings in NYC, be sure to follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook.

Harlem Brewing Company eyes site in Harlem

Yesterday, the city’s Economic Development Corporation announced that it had found buyers to develop the site of the old Taystee Bakery complex on West 125th Street between Amsterdam and Morningside Avenues in Harlem. The space will become CREATE @ Harlem Green, a commercial and industrial space that spans 328,000 square feet. This would not have been beer news in itself, except that CREATE said they already had one client signed on for the space - Harlem Brewing Company.

For those unaware, no, there isn’t a brewery in Harlem already. In fact, there hasn’t been one since Prohibition. But HBC was formed by Harlem resident Celeste Beatty in 2000, and contract brews one beer - Sugar Hill Golden Ale - at a facility in Saratoga Springs. Beatty’s business has picked up steam with better distribution this year, and the ultimate plan was always to open a fully-functioning brewery in Harlem.

It looks like her plan might come to fruition. The plan for the space for Harlem Brewing Company includes a full-scale brewery with room for guided tours, a tap room, and a hop garden on the building’s open roof. Not only would Harlem Brewing Company be the first brewery in Harlem since Prohibition, it would also be the first off-premises brewery in Manhattan in the modern brewing era.

This was eleven years in the making for Harlem Brewing Company, and they’ll have to wait a couple more; construction is slated to begin next Spring.

Pony Bar going high-tech with its All-American Club

image

The two-year old tradition of writing down the beers you drink on a sheet at The Pony Bar (637 10th Ave. at 45th St., Hell’s Kitchen) is coming to an end.

For those who have never been (or have always wondered why so many people are writing things down at the bar), The Pony Bar created the All-American Club when they opened. It’s simple: drink 100 different beers, rate them on a scale of 1-10, and then earn a free work shirt with The Pony’s insignia. In the early days, the list was kept in a vertical file, but lately, it has been scanned into a computer and reprinted each time a patron comes back.

The old system is a victim of the bar’s own success, and with the sheer number of people who have started but not finished their lists, there had to be a better way than killing so many trees.
