Under Construction: Alewife Queens

image

Way back in the Spring, we mentioned a new craft beer bar from the folks behind Lord Hobo in Cambridge, Mass., and Alewife in Baltimore that was in the works for Long Island City: Alewife Queens (5-14 51st Ave., at 5th St., Long Island City). It takes a while to get a place up and running, but progress is being made. They’ve gutted the place, designed the bar, gotten the appropriate paperwork, and whipped up a snappy logo (above).

They’re saying it’ll be another six weeks until they open (plan your trip to LIC for late September), but they can’t open without staff. So, they’ve posted job listings on Craigslist for a competent head chef and bar manager. If you think you have what it takes, have the requisite experience, and you’re passionate about beer, shoot them your resume.

Local breweries take center stage on Wall Street Journal Report

We thought it was pretty cool to catch some local brewers on TV yesterday. On this weekend’s The Wall Street Journal Report with Maria Bartiromo, which airs locally here on Channel 4, Maria spoke with Shane Welch of Sixpoint Craft Ales. Not only that, but there’s also a cameo from Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewery, extolling the virtues of craft beer and food at last week’s Good Beer at BAM event.

Two Beery Events at The Vanderbilt next week

image

Prospect Heights beer geeks can take comfort in knowing that they’ve always got a good beer spot in The Vanderbilt (570 Vanderbilt Ave., at Bergen St., Prospect Heights). Two beer events there next week let their craft beer chops shine.

First, on Tuesday at 7:30pm, Kelso of Brooklyn and The Vanderbilt team up for a four-course, four-beer summer clambake. The clambake also features a salad, barbeque pork, and dessert, along with perfectly-paired local beers. Kelso will be rolling out two bourbon-barrel aged beers as well: their Imperial IPA and Recessionator. The whole kit and kaboodle is just $50

Then, on Friday, August 5th at 11pm, The Barman’s Fund and Brooklyn Brewery team up for a late-night event. The Barman’s Fund is a group of New York City who pledge to donate their tips from their first shift each month to charity. What does this have to do with beer? Well, the bartenders at The Vanderbilt will be pouring free pints of donated Brooklyn Brewery beer. So, that’s more money to use to tip your bartenders for a good cause! This month’s charity is the Brooklyn Free Clinic.

The full menu for the beer dinner, and how to get your reservation, are after the jump:
