Happy Hour: The Fortnight Begins

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight in and around New York:

  • As we mentioned yesterday, The Bodega (24 St. Nicholas Ave., at Troutman St., Bushwick) kicks off their Founders Fortnight with a tapping of the Devil Dancer Triple IPA. Plus, they’ll have Centennial IPA, Red’s Rye Pale Ale, Cerise, and more on tap when they open at 5pm today.
  • Further south in Brooklyn, The Double Windsor (210 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace) is having their Stones & Bones event, with beer from Stone Brewing Co. and ribs! They’ll have the Lukcy Basartd, the Double Dry-Hopped Ruination IPA, and more on tap, plus two special collaboration beers in bottles: a Green Tea IPA brewed with Japan’s Baird Beer and Guam’s Ishii Brewing, and a Cherry Chocolate Stout brewed with Troegs and homebrewers Jason Fields and Kevin Sheppard.
  • Over in Jersey, it’s Sierra Nevada night at Andy’s Corner (257 Queen Anne Rd., at Fort Lee Rd., Bogota) starting at 7pm. They’ll have both the Ovila Dubbel and Saison on tap, along with the 2010 vintage Bigfoot Barleywine, a keg of the 30th Anniversary Dogfish Head collaboration Life & Limb, and many more.

Rattle-N-Hum takes you behind the curtain at Victory

Back in June, Downingtown, Pennsylvania’s Victory Brewing Company announced they would no longer be open for brewery tours. Many fast-growing breweries have been doing this lately as demand for their beer has grown, and the brewery simply cannot accommodate tours while trying to meet this demand. Brooklyn’s Sixpoint dealt with the same problem last year.

But there’s one more chance to get a tour of the brewery, and it comes on Saturday, August 27th, courtesy of New York’s own Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown).

Our three simple requirements for a beer garden

image
This place is not - nor has it ever been - a beer garden. (Photo via DoctorWho on Flickr)

We’re starting to sound like a broken record here. We’ve come across some pretty awful lists of “the best beer gardens in New York” over the summer, but this one from NYC 10 Best might be the worst offender of them all, mainly for one of their selections:

McSorley’s Old Ale House15 East 7th Street, East Village.  When it doors opened in 1854 this NY beer garden was called “The Old House at Home” and is conisidered the oldest active bar in the city.  Today, this bar now renamed to McSorley’s, still only serves their two, 150 year old house draft beers – McSorley’s Cream Stock Ale and McSorley’s Famous Lager [Ed. note: McSorley’s hasn’t served a “Cream Stock Ale” in a long time. They serve an Irish Red Ale and an Irish Dark Lager].  Every serious NY beer drinker must visit this historic spot and try both flavors while standing on the saw dust covered floors at least once in their lifetime.

We really shouldn’t even have to explain why McSorley’s isn’t a beer garden. Never - EVER - in McSorley’s history has it been called a “beer garden.” A bar, perhaps. A tavern? Sure. But anyone who thinks that McSorley’s qualifies as a beer garden has either been drinking too much beer, or has absolutely no idea what a beer garden is.

We have three simple qualifications for a beer garden:

Founders takes residency at The Bodega

image

We’re a bit partial to a little bar off the Jefferson Street stop on the L Train called The Bodega (24 St. Nicholas Ave., at Troutman St., Bushwick). Maybe it’s because it’s within spitting distance of Brew York, New York HQ. Maybe it’s because its pressed sandwiches and brunch are damn tasty. But mostly, it’s because of the good beer they serve. A beer bottle list that’s twice as long as its wine list helps dispel the notion that this place is just a wine bar. And while they’ve only got six taps, those taps work hard to pour great craft beer from locally and abroad.

Starting tomorrow, and for the next fortnight (that’s two weeks), those six taps will exclusively pour beers from Grand Rapids, Michigan’s Founders Brewing Company.

Happy Hour: Imports from across the pond & across the country

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight in and around New York:

  • Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) hosts an overseas visitor: Henry Chevallier-Guild of Suffolk, England’s Aspall Cyderhouse, an eighth-generator cider maker. He’ll be there starting at 5pm, along with his ciders and an assortment of imports from SBS Imports on tap, like De Proef Les Deux Brasseurs Ale, a Belgian collaboration with Allagash, and Bockor Bellegems Bruin, a Flanders Ale from… Flanders, naturally.
  • It’s Hair of the Dog Night at The Double Windsor (210 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace) tonight at 7pm, with three drafts from the Portland, Oregon-based brewers: Adam, Doggie Claws Barleywine, and Blue Dot Double IPA.
