Happy Hour: Get Schooled in Beer Camp

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight in and around New York:

  • Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) hosts Sierra Nevada today starting at 3pm, with a bevy of beverages from Chico, California, including all four brews from their Beer Camp Series on tap: California Common, Double IPA, Juniper Black Ale, and the Weizenbock.
  • Smuttynose hosts a tasting at George Keeley (485 Amsterdam Ave., at 83rd St., Upper West Side) tonight at 6pm, with seven taps and a firkin, including Star Island Single, Big A IPA, and Homonculus.
  • RSVP now for one of the Mikkeller Sense of Sound Pairings tonight at 7 and 9pm at Taproom 307 (307 3rd Ave., at 24th St., Murray Hill). For $20, experience beers from their Single Hop Series paired with sounds. Other pairing sessions - including sight and touch - will run on the next two Wednesdays. To score a spot, call the bar at (212) 725-4766.
  • Captain Lawrence takes the taps tonight at The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay). Starting at 6pm, enjoy 5 Years Later, the Smoked Porter, 2010 and 2011 vintages of Golden Delicious, and more. Plus, they’ll have free buffalo chicken croquettes, and brewer Scott Vaccaro will be on-hand to chat about their beers, and - if you’re nice - their new brewery expansion project.

Brewers weather Irene; most are unscathed

With Hurricane Irene bearing down on New York’s doorstep, brewers in flood-prone areas prepared as best they could. Some boarded up, some sealed up equipment, and others put their supplies on risers to avoid floodwaters. Many brewers are located in industrial areas that are often more flood-prone, so we always take a deep breath when a storm like this moves in.

Happy Hour: Taste the Lagunitas

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight in and around New York:

  • Lagunitas is at Good Beer (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A) tonight from 6:30-9:30p. Enjoy plenty of delicious beers from Northern California, including their IPA, Undercover Shut-down, and more, plus discounts on pints and growlers.
  • This week’s Ten Buck Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) celebrates American craft beers with English and German influences. $10 gets you six tastings of beers like Victory Braumaister Pils, Stoudt’s Scarlet Lady ESB, and Wandering Star Mild at Heart. The tasting gets underway at 7:30pm.
  • Anglo-American Pale Ales are the subject of this week’s free Tuesday Tasting at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) tonight at 7pm. You’ll get to sample several different American Pale Ales for free, with your host, Bierkraft’s own Dr. Carl Burger.

For beer sellers, no calm before the storm

In all the seriousness of the storm, here’s some fun, light-hearted beer news. While going to pick up the last of our needed provisions to prepare for Hurricane Irene, we stopped into Good Beer (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A) to add a few beers to our supply. Dave Cichowicz, Good Beer’s owner, shared this fun fact: yesterday was the shop’s third-busiest day ever.

  • It’s New Jersey Beer Night at Barcade Jersey City (163 Newark Ave., at Erie St., Jersey City) starting at 5pm. A whopping nne breweries from New Jersey will be represented: Boaks, the new Carton Brewing, Climax, Cricket Hill, Flying Fish, Kane, New Jersey Beer Co., Ramstein, and River Horse, plus they’ll have a special surprise guest tap!
  • The Three Monkeys (236 W. 54th St., at Broadway, Midtown) celebrates its first anniversary starting tonight at 5pm and all weekend long. Enjoy drink specials and special guests while sipping from one of their 36 taps.
  • Stone visits The Iron Monkey (97 Greene St., at York St., Jersey City, NJ) tonight at 6pm, with eight brews on tap including Oaked Arrogant Bastard, Belgo Anise Imperial Russian Stout, and the Jersey debut of the new 15th Anniversary Ale.
  • Sunswick 35/35 (35-02 35th St., at 35th Ave., Astoria) hosts Shmaltz Brewing tonight at 7pm, with taps like Coney Island Lager, Barrel-Aged Human Blockhead (aged in Buffalo Trace Barrels), and the Reunion ‘11 - a collaboration beer with Athens, Georgia’s Terrapin Beer Company.
  • Brewery Ommegang has a tasting tonight at 7pm at Broadway Dive (2662 Broadway, at 101st St., Upper West Side). For $14, get a sampler flight with complimentary cheese pairings that includes Abbey, Rare Vos, Witte, and Aphrodite.
