Happy Hour: Are you ready for some football?

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight in and around New York:

  • Can’t believe it’s been a year: Bier International (2099 Frederick Douglass Blvd., at 113th St., Harlem) celebrates its first anniversary tonight starting at 5pm with live music, drink specials, and prize drawings.
  • Monday Night Football kicks off tonight, and craft beer bars are celebrating: Hop Devil Grill (129 St. Marks Pl., at Ave. A, East Village) has select $15 pitchers of craft beer and half-price appetizers tonight, and Standings (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) has free Atomic Wings during the game every Monday night throughout the season.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight in and around New York:

  • The NFL kicks off tonight, and a few craft beer spots will be celebrating. Standings (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) has beers from Abita and Leinenkugel to representing the Saints and Packers, plus free pizza at 8:30pm. Saints hangout d.b.a. Brooklyn (113 N. 7th St., at Berry St., Williamsburg) will have Tchoup Shop in the house for a New Orleans-style tailgate starting at 5pm, plus beer specials all night.
  • Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) dedicates its happy hour tonight to Detroit’s Atwater beers. They’ll have ‘em on tap tonight from 5-7pm.
  • Tonight from 7-10pm, The Half Pint (76 W. 3rd St., at Thompson St., Greenwich Village) hosts a fundraiser for the Woodstock Farm Sanctuary featuring Smuttynose beer. They’ll have Robust Porter, Pumpkin Ale, and the Farmhouse Saison on tap, and 25% of proceeds from the bar will go to the sanctuary, and they’ll have food for purchase, too.
  • Sierra Nevada takes over the taps at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) tonight at 7pm, with tons of brews from Chico, California on tap, including Life and Limb, Torpedo IPA, FOAM Pilsner, Tumbler, and more!
  • And as we mentioned earlier, Bronx Ale House (216 W. 238th St., at Broadway, Kingsbridge, Bronx) is home to the debut of Bronx Brewery and their debut beer, Bronx Pale Ale tonight at 6pm. Meet brewer Damian Brown and try out New York City’s newest beer for the very first time!

Japan Society dissects Japanese craft brewing’s birth and rebirth

Craft brewing isn’t limited to the United States, obviously. Sure, we know about the rich history of brewing in places like England, Belgium, Germany, and the Czech Republic. And some of us even know about the burgeoning craft beer scene in Denmark. But Japan’s craft beer scene has experienced steady growth since microbreweries became legal there in 1994. Many of their beers never cross the Pacific, but the ones that do are lauded.

If you’re curious about the Japanese craft beer movement - or just want to sample some good craft beer, The Japan Society (333 E. 47th St., at 1st Ave., Midtown East) has an upcoming event that’s right up your alley.
