Happy Hour: Connecticut’s Finest

Here’s our recommended beer-related events in New York after work tonight:

  • Good Beer (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A) hosts Cottrell Brewing out of Pawcatuck, Connecticut tonight from 6:30-9pm. Try their newest beer, Oktoberfest, plus their old standards, Old Yankee Ale and Mystic Bridge IPA. They’ll have discounts on pints and growlers, too!
  • Head to DBGB Kitchen & Bar (299 Bowery, at 1st St., East Village) for another Pretty Things Good Time Beer Social tonight from 6-9pm. Owners Dann and Martha Paquette will be “fresh off the boat,” literally, as they disembark from the Queen Mary 2 this afternoon and head right down to DBGB. They’ll serve some classic Pretty Things beers and properly-paired tapas plates, too.
  • Tonight at 7:30 at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village), it’s another ten buck tasting - this one focusing on “Oktoberfest-ish” beers. Yes, our good friend Mike Lovullo picked a slate of six German-style beers to serve tonight for $10, including Smuttynose Maibock, Schlenkerla Krausen, and Weissenohe Monk’s Fest.

Meet RJ Rockers, the newest brewery to distribute in New York

Slowly but surely, beers from R.J. Rockers Brewing Company are popping up at bars and beer stores around the city. We’ve spotted them recently on tap at Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) and in the coolers at Good Beer (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A), but they’re stepping up their game on will soon see distribution at other beer bars and stores across the five boroughs.

Where’s this beer from? Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Stop it, we know what you’re thinking. They make beer in the South? Yeah, surprisingly, they do, and even more surprisingly, it doesn’t taste like Bud Light or Moonshine or anything else you might think Southerners drink.
