Happy Hour: It’s Goatastic!

Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in New York after work tonight:

  • Andy’s Corner (257 Queen Anne Rd., at Fort Lee Rd., Bogota) in Jersey has Dogfish Head in the house all night long tonight, with 120 Minute IPA, Palo Santo Marron, a 2007 vintage Olde School Barleywine, and a 2008 World Wide Stout rounding out the list of goodies.
  • To help promote Goat as a food source, Betto (138 N. 8th St., at Berry St., Williamsburg) hosts Goatoberfest tonight from 9-Midnight. They’ll serve a free goat roast with flatbreads and condiments. What does this have to do with beer? Well, there’s free beer from Brooklyn Brewery.
  • And speaking of Brooklyn Brewery, they’ll be at the new Ditch Plains (100 W. 82nd St., at Columbus Ave., Upper West Side) tonight at 8pm for a tap takeover. They’ll be pouring BLAST!, Post Road Pumpkin, Pennant Ale, and more.

It’s Cider Week in New York!

image

It’s Cider Week in New York City! Hudson Valley’s apple growers have partnered with restaurants, bars, and others to dedicate an entire week to ciders in New York, including our own local cideries.

Now, naturally, we’re not talking about the kind of cider you like warmed and mulled with a little cinnamon. We’re talking the fermented kind - the kind that you can find on tap in bars… and the kind you may scoff at for no reason. Cider Week is a great time to open your mind to cider, learn that it’s not just for people who can’t stand the bitterness of beer, and maybe even enjoy it.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

Here’s our recommended beer-related events in New York after work tonight:

  • As we mentioned earlier, Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg) hosts their 7th Anniversary Party all night tonight (beginning when they open early, at 2pm). Enjoy rare beers like Captain Lawrence Golden Delicious, Founders Kaiser Curmudgeon, Bear Republic Cuvee de Bubba, and much more.
  • Our friends at The Bodega (24 St. Nicholas Ave., at Troutman St., Bushwick) installed six new beer taps (and two wine taps) this week, and they officially flip the switch on them today. • Brooklyn Brewery pays a visit to Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) starting at 7pm tonight with a full-on tap takeover. Among the beers they’ll be pouring: the 2007 Monster Ale, 2008 Black Chocolate Stout, and Cookie Jar Porter, plus all your usual favorites from Garrett Oliver and team.
  • Our friends at Narragansett will be at Puck Fair (298 Lafayette St., at Houston St., Soho) tonight from 6-9pm pouring their seasonal Fest and giving stuff away with the ‘Gansett Girls.

Barcade Celebrates 7th Anniversary Tonight

image

Just days before leaving New York in November of 2004, my roommate told me of a bar that had just opened just a few blocks south of our apartment.

He described it as accurately as he could: “it’s a huge space with an amazing beer list, a pool table, and - oh, get this - a ton of video games from the 80s that you can play for a quarter a piece. You have to check it out!”

I flat-out didn’t believe him. No bar could have all that! But on my very last weekend in New York City before what would be a brief move to the craft beer mecca of Vermont, I saw for myself that he wasn’t kidding. It was real. It was amazing. And its name was Barcade.
