Your Beery Weekend: November 11-13

image
The Home of the Islanders becomes the Home of Beer on Saturday as the International Great Beer Expo comes to Nassau Coliseum.

Are you the type that plans out your weekend according to beer? After the jump, everything you need to know about beer events in and around New York this weekend. Enjoy!

The full calendar is after the jump…

FRIDAY

  • Cafe D’Alsace (1695 2nd Ave., at 88th St., Upper East Side) continues their Firkin Fridays with a tapping of Brauerei Bayer Theinheim Ungespundetes Landbier. That unpronounceable German mouthful is a sessionable Kellerbier from a small town near Bamberg. And it’s on cask starting at 6:30pm.
  • Two Whole Foods in Manhattan have free sampling tonight. At Whole Foods Union Square (4 Union Sq. S., at University Pl, Union Square), they’ll be offering samples of Duvel and Ommegang from 3-7pm. Meanwhile, at Whole Foods Tribeca (270 Greenwich St., at Warren St., Tribeca), they’ll be pouring beers from Breckenridge from 4-8pm, including 471 IPA and Vanilla Porter.

SATURDAY

  • If you’re out on Long Island, you might want to check out the International Great Beer Expo at Nassau Coliseum. Tickets are still available ($45 online or $55 at the door), and you’ll have access to a whole bunch of beer from local brewers like Great South Bay and Blue Point and national and international brands like Avery, Long Trail, Widmer, and Weihenstephan. Now, don’t say we didn’t warn you: huge abuses of beer take place at these fests by some people who come to these things just there to get wasted. But if you can tolerate masses of drunken fools, there’s some good beer to be had.
  • Closer to home, The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) takes part in the Brooklyn Beer Summit with their “Up from the Vault” event. They’ll roll out some vintage kegs from their cellar starting at 6pm, including a 2007 Southern Tier Backburner, 2010 Founders Breakfast Stout, 2007 Great Divide Hercules, and many more old and potent beers. They’ll also serve up some special Beer Summit Chili.
  • Head to GRAB Specialty Foods (438 7th Ave., at 15th St., Park Slope) for a Stone tasting on Saturday afternoon from 3-6pm. They’ll have free samples of the Cali-Belgique, Sublimely Self-Righteous, and Levitation Ale. Who doesn’t like free beer?

SUNDAY

  • A quiet Sunday on the event front, but since Sundays in the fall mean football, might we suggest a couple of sports bars with good beer menus? Camp out for the afternoon at Mudville 9 (126 Chambers St., at W. Broadway, Tribeca), Standings (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village), or Matt Torrey’s (46 Bushwick Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg)… and stick around for the nightcap between the Jets and Patriots at 8:30.

Danish brewer Evil Twin pays homage to Williamsburg with Hipster Ale

image

Yes, this beer label is real. Denmark’s Evil Twin Brewing received Federal label approval last week to export a beer to the US called Williamsburg Hipster Ale. The brewery, which just started distributing on our shores earlier this year, calls the American-style Pale Ale a “tribute to our favorite hipster neighborhoods from across the globe.”

Perhaps brewer Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø truly loves Williamsburg, and his beer pays homage to what’s known globally as our city’s hippest neighborhood… you know, much like how his Katz Pis must pay homage to his love of litter boxes, and Soft DK pays homage to… well, you get the point. We’re skeptical of his motives, but we’re flattered nonetheless to have a beer named after one of our city’s most revered (and reviled) stereotypes.

And let’s face it: while it’s a shameless attempt to capitalize on that stereotype, once cans of PBR became too popular to be hip, the hipster’s fervent embrace of craft beer culture helped make Williamsburg a craft beer mecca. It’s one of the few neighborhoods in New York where you can’t walk more than a block without practically tripping over craft beer. And Williamsburg was drinking craft beer before it was cool. Brooklyn Brewery just celebrated their 15th anniversary brewing beer on North 11th Street, and Mugs Alehouse (125 Bedford Ave., at N. 11th St., Williamsburg) has been serving up fresh draught beer since 1993. So maybe Evil Twin is onto something.

Here’s the brewery’s full description of the beer, as it appears on the bottle:

Perhaps you’ve heard of a single hop beer, where a brewer showcases the qualities of just one hop. Well this is something entirely different - a single hip beer - our tribute to our favorite hipster neighborhoods from across the globe. This super-cool, disheveled little pale ale is dedicated to Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It’s an homage to skinny jeans, converse, vintage clothing, and all things local. Sent to you lovingly 4,000 miles away from the beautiful island of Fano, Denmark. Cheers, hipsters!

Expect to see it at specialty beer shops by month’s end - like, perhaps, Spuyten Duyvil Grocery, right in that uber-hip mall on Bedford Avenue in the heart of Williamsburg.

For the record, Evil Twin has already brewed one other homage to a hip neighborhood: Istedgade Hipster Ale and Södermalm Hipster Ale - named for hip neighborhoods in Copenhagen and Stockholm - were released earlier this year. Just like Williamsburg, both of those neighborhoods have experienced rapid gentrification recently.

Frankly, we give it three years before Williamsburg Hipster Ale becomes too expensive to brew and Evil Twin releases Bushwick Hipster Ale.
