Nighthawk Cinema and Brooklyn Brewery give you dinner and a movie

image

We’ve been super-psyched about the prospect of seeing a movie at the new Nitehawk Cinema (136 Metropolitan Ave., at Berry St., Williamsburg), mainly because you have have a beer while you watch a movie. And not just any old beer, but really good beer; their tap list includes Sixpoint Sweet Action, Kelso of Brooklyn Kellerfest, Lagunitas Little Sumpin’ Wild, and several other craft brews. Oh, and their food? Well, that ain’t half-bad either, given they have a Michelin-starred chef at the helm in Saul Bolton.

So, great beer, great food, movies… what more could you ask for? Well, how about a beer pairing dinner in front of the silver screen?

Happy Hour: Pick from the Pumpkin Patch

It’s Wednesday, November 16th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • We mentioned it before and we’ll say it again: get to Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) for their Very Special Keg event. They’re tapping them as we speak and they’ll be on as long as they last!
  • The Ginger Man (11 E. 36th St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) also tapped a bunch of pumpkin beers today for their Third Annual Pumpkin Patch event, presenting a bevy of great fall seasonal beers in the waning days before they’re gone. It could be your last chance to get beers like Southern Tier Pumking, Cigar City Good Gourd, Elysian Night Owl, and many more, so get picking!
  • 21st Amendment takes over the taps for a rare Wednesday night event at Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg). Starting at 5pm, enjoy some beers never before seen in New York, like their 5 South American Pale Ale, Mo ‘tcho Risin’ Imperial Chocolate Stout, and their collborative Old Ale with Oregon brewer Ninkasi, Allies Win the War.
  • This week’s $10 Tasting at Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village) features beers from Pittsfield, Massachusetts’ own Wandering Star. Get two full beers, a three-beer flight, a taste of bourbon, and tots for just ten bucks starting at 7pm.
  • Cafe D’Alsace (1695 2nd Ave., at 88th St., Upper East Side) partners with Goose Island tonight from 6-10pm for a four-course beer pairing dinner. Come as you please, with no reservations, and enjoy courses like Pepe Nero with Cracked Peppercorn Crusted Bass and Matilda with an Autumn Salad of frisee, duck confit, squash, and goat cheese for just $55.
  • Nebraska Brewing Company takes the taps at George Keeley (485 Amsterdam Ave., at 83rd St., Upper West Side) tonight starting at 6pm. Enjoy Hop God, their Little Betty Russian Imperial Stout, and the Wick for Brains Pumpkin Ale.
  • Get a cool glass from the Duvel Collection tonight at 4th Avenue Pub (76 4th Ave., at Bergen St., Boerum Hill). They’ll be pouring Duvel, obviously, and if you drink one, they’ll give away some pretty cool beer glassware while supplies last.

Today: some Very Special Kegs at Blind Tiger

image

Every year, the folks at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) cart out some of the beers they’ve been keeping in their cellar all at once, in an event called VSK (or Very Special Keg). They’ll put them all on at 3pm this afternoon and the event runs until the kegs kick.

Among the highlights this year: a the Weyerbacher Decadance, an American Strong Ale brewed by the Pennsylvania brewery to celebrate their 10th anniversary in 2005 (!), the now-retired Bruery Orchard White, and the Smuttynose Iced Barleywine, a souped-up, highly potent version of their standard barleywine offering brewed in the style of an ice beer.

Naturally, we suggest you get there early for the best selection, because a lot of this stuff will go fast and may never be seen again.

Happy Hour: Beyond the Crawl and Toast

It’s Tuesday, November 15th. We’ve already told you about tonight’s Vanberg & DeWulf’s Coast-to-Coast Toast and the Shmaltz Genesis 15:15 Tapping, but there’s plenty more going on! Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Sixpoint unleashes a whopping 20 taps on The Pony Bar (637 10th Ave. at 45th St., Hell’s Kitchen) tonight starting at 6pm. Enjoy single-hopped IPAs from their Spice of Life Series, a cask of Signal, some beers from their Mad Scientists Series, and their newest beer - one that’s particularly timely given today’s events downtown, Occupation Ale.
  • Good Beer (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A) hosts the San Francisco-based makers of those fine canned beers, 21st Amendment, tonight from 6:30-9pm. The shop will serve some of their beers will be in much larger metal vessels… you know, kegs, like Back in Black, Brew Free or Die IPA, and their collaboration Old Ale with Ninkasi, Allies Win The War.

Tonight, Crawl with Schmaltz and Toast from Coast to Coast

image

Today is a celebration of two anniversaries in the beer industry. First, New York’s Shmaltz Brewing is celebrating fifteen years of making beer today by releasing its new Genesis 15:15 Anniversary Barleywine at 15 bars across the city at 5:15pm. The bars (listed below) are all across the city, so you can sample it at once place, and if you like it, move on to another and have the beer all over again. A more organized, epic, 15-stop crawl can be tracked on Twitter by following Shmaltz’s NYC Twitter feed.

Meanwhile, Belgian beer importers Vanberg & DeWulf are celebrating their 30th Anniversary today with a “Coast to Coast Toast.” Several bars in New York will be participating by putting on a bevy of their imported beers, and you can earn a badge on Untappd just by trying one of them. Even better, by earning the badge, you’ll be qualified for a chance to win a trip for two to Belgium courtesy of the Belgian Travel Office and Delta Airlines. Untappd will be kicking off the festivities at Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) starting at 6:30pm, but plenty of others bars will participate in the toast around the city by throwing on the best of their Belgian beer.

The full rundown of locations of tonight’s ongoing events is below…
