Newest Sixpoint cans hit store shelves this week

image

We’ve known for months that it was coming, but the day is finally here: Sixpoint’s newest can - err, “nanokeg” - gets shipped to stores today: their stout, Diesel.

Diesel isn’t a new beer; Sixpoint has been brewing it since 2005. But it’s new to cans, and much easier to take home to enjoy its dark, roasted nuttiness and pungent hop aroma and flavor. Like many of Sixpoint’s beers, this one is a bit hoppier than your standard stout, clocking in at 69 IBUs (International Bittering Units).

NYC DOH poised to ruin free bar snacks

image
The free bagel spread on weekend mornings at Brooklyn Ale House is apparently a threat to your health.

Having spoiled fun for thousands of people over seemingly innocuous traditions, the New York Times is reporting that the City’s Department of Health has a new target at local bars: free communal bar snacks. After an inspection at Midtown institution Sardi’s, the free communal cheese spread and crackers at the bar got the heave-ho, along with peanuts and pretzels, with the DOH’s spoil-sports reasoning that “food [is] not protected from potential source of contamination.”

Reminder: Our Brewers’ Brunch is this Saturday at Jimmy’s

image

If you like brunch and beer, you’ll love an event we’ve planned with our friends at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village). This Saturday, November 19th from 1-4pm, we’ll host the Five Brewers Brunch, with fresh beer from five  breweries, visits from local brewers, and a walk around brunch buffet with tasty foods from guest chef Simon Glenn of Tchoup Shop and additional eats from Jimmy’s.

On the beer end, we’ll have local, interesting, and rare beers from five talented brewers: Barrier Brewing, Pretty Things, Crossroads, Blind Bat, and Wandering Star. On the food end, enjoy items like black-and-tan pancakes, banh mi biscuits with pork belly, country ham, and lots more. It’s an all-you-can-care-to-eat-and-drink event, so come hungry and thirsty.

Discounted tickets are available through BeerMenus.com for just $45 right now. Hope to see you there!

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, November 17th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s been a whole ten years since Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) first opened in Park Slope, and Kelso of Brooklyn is pulling out the stops for the beer shop’s anniversary celebration tonight at 7pm. Enjoy their Imperial Stout brewed especially for the event (and a Maple barrel-aged version!), plus a whole bunch more barrel-aged brews like Nut Brown Lager in Jack Daniel’s barrels, Sour Quad Bock in Cabernet barrels, and their IPA in Brandy barrels.
  • While you’re in Park Slope, might as well pop over to The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) starting at 7pm as Peak Organic rolls out their Local Series, with four beers brewed with hops and malts from four different states: Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, and - of course - New York! They’ll also be pouring their first keg of the Winter Session.
  • Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) debuts the 21st Amendment/Ninkasi collaboration beer, Allies Win The War, today starting at 3pm. Brewmasters Shaun O'Sullivan (21st Amendment) and Jamie Floyd (Ninkasi) will be on hand, along with 21A beers like the Egyptian-style HQT, Roasted American, and Old Glory American Strong Ale.
  • Brouwerij Lane (78 Greenpoint Ave., at Franklin St., Greenpoint) kicks off their Wet Hop Weekend today. Tonight and all weekend long, have a $12 flight of four wet-hopped beers, including Sierra Nevada Northern Hemisphere Harvest and Founders Harvest Ale.
  • Give a little and get a little tonight at Bronx Ale House (216 W. 238th St., at Broadway, Kingsbridge). It’s Cans for Cans! All night, if you donate a canned food item for the POTS Food Pantry, you’ll get a free canned beer, like Butternuts Pork Slap or Oskar Blues Dale’s Pale Ale. Additional cans will get you 20% off the menu, too!
  • Over in Jersey City, The Iron Monkey (97 Greene St., at York St., Jersey City, NJ) hosts Radeberger tonight at 6pm. Some people swear by this pilsner, and while we’re not among them, the prospect of $4 pints and free glassware are always hard to pass up.
