image

Pairing your Thanksgiving dinner with beer

image

Thanksgiving is coming up, and a lot of families with gather for dinner with a fine bottle of wine, or perhaps a bit of eggnog. Maybe you’re going to go home and wonder, “where’s the beer?” You’ve discovered craft beer, but Uncle Joe’s knowledge of beer goes no further than the confines of the Anheuser-Busch factory, and Aunt Maude turns her nose at the mere mention of beer as she sips her glass of merlot. Family gatherings like this are a great opportunity to make believers in beer, break down the stereotypes of craft beer, and introduce people to new aromas and flavors that they never associate with beer.

And let’s get to the real point here: beer is far more friendly to food pairings than wine. Beer Odds and Ends: Another LI brewery hits Manhattan

We’ve seen a lot of new entrants to the New York beer market from Long Island in the past couple years. Since 2010, Greenport Harbor, Barrier, Blind Bat, Long Ireland, and Great South Bay have all been spotted on tap lines in the City.

Add another one to that list: Spider Bite Brewing Company, out of Holbrook, Long Island, made their New York City debut at Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) and Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) over the weekend, with their First Bite Pale Ale. It’s a straightforward malty American Pale Ale with a balance of Chinook, Cascade, Columbus, and Magnum hops, clocking in at 5.5%.

The brewery debuted at the beginning of this month, so you’ll start seeing more of their beer around the city soon, including a Russian Imperial Stout, Boris the Spider, that should be available in December.

New beer releases from Captain Lawrence, and a wallet-friend dinner menu after the jump…
