Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, December 8th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Sixpoint takes over the taps at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) beginning at 7pm. They’re bringing a huge lineup, including Gorilla Warfare coffee porter, the Atlantic Amber, the new Mad Scientists #7 Cranberry Porter, and a cask of Autobahn IPA.
  • If you want a really good deal on really good beer, drop by The Brazen Head (228 Atlantic Ave., at Court St., Cobble Hill) from 6-8pm tonight for $3 pints of Founders Centennial IPA, Cascade Pale Ale, and Dirty Bastard, plus $3 12-ounce pours of their Breakfast Stout.
  • The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) offers up some goodies from Ballast Point and Two Brothers tonight at 8pm. They’ll serve up 2010 vintages of the Two Brothers Northwind Imperial Stout and the Ballast Point Bourbon Barrel-Aged Black Marlin, plus a whole bunch more from both breweries (including, of course, the much-beloved Sculpin).
  • Brooklyn Brew Shop does a live homebrewing demo and tasting tonight from 7:30-9pm at Breukelen Bier Merchants (182 Grand St., at Driggs Ave., Williamsburg). Watch them make beer while you sip a sample of their Chocolate Maple Porter homebrew. Then, you can buy a kit and make it at home!
  • There’s nothing better than the taste of free beer. Head downtown for a free tasting of Chimay Red, White, and Blue at Whole Foods Tribeca (270 Greenwich St., at Warren St., Tribeca) tonight from 4-8pm.
  • City Swiggers (320 E. 86th St., at 2nd Ave., Upper East Side) celebrates their grand opening tonight starting at 5pm. They’ll be pouring some special beers, plus giving away gift certificates, glassware, growlers, and more!
  • Over in Jersey City, The Iron Monkey (97 Greene St., at York St., Jersey City, NJ) hosts Dogfish Head starting at 6pm. They’ll have a whopping 24 beers on tap from Delaware, including 120 Minute IPA, Festina Peche, a 2010 Olde School barleywine, and a special tapping of the Pearl Jam tribute beer, Faithfull Ale.

Happy Hour: There’s no place like bars for the holidays

It’s Wednesday, December 7th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Celebrate Holiday Beers all day and night at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) today starting at 3pm. They’ll have a bevy of holiday seasonal beers on tap, including Anchor Christmas Ale, Mahr’s Christmas Bock, Mikkeller Santa’s Little Helper, and Lagunitas Sucks Holiday Ale.
  • They’ll also celebrate holiday beers at The Double Windsor (210 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace) with “A Very Vinyl Christmas” tonight at 8pm. They’ll spin holiday records while pouring beers like Troegs Mad Elf, Evil Twin Soft Christmas, and De Ranke Pere Noel. Buy a beer, and you’ll get free Christmas cookies!
  • Not to be outdone, David Copperfield’s (1394 York Ave., at 74th St., Upper East Side) is promising to pour 20 winter seasonal and holiday beers tonight at 7pm as well, with some on draft and some in bottles.
  • Dive Bar (732 Amsterdam Ave., at 96th St., Upper West Side) holds a breast cancer benefit in honor of a friend of the Dive Bars, Dani Caynor, who recently lost her battle with the disease. Starting at 7pm, buy a Duvel and get a free Duvel Artist Glass… and meanwhile, a portion of the night’s profits will be donated to breast cancer research in her honor.

Happy Hour: Thirsty… Tuesday?

It’s Tuesday, December 6th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Good Beer (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A) has a Dogfish Head tap takeover tonight. It might be the biggest tap takeover we’ve ever seen the year-old beer store do. They’ll have eight lines on, including 120 Minute IPA, Immort Ale, Bitches Brew, Rasion D'Etre, and more. Grab a pint and enjoy starting at 6:30!
  • Meanwhile, Dogfish Head Hellhound on My Ale will be pouring at Rye House (11 W. 17th St., at 5th Ave., Union Square) tonight at 5pm, appropriately paired with the music of Robert Johnson, the performer of the beer’s namesake song, “Hellhound on My Trail.”
  • Lagunitas does its annual tap takeover at The Pony Bar (637 10th Ave. at 45th St., Hell’s Kitchen) tonight starting at 6pm, with the Sucks Holiday Ale, Wet-Hop IPA, Fusion 7, and a whole lot more on tap. As The Pony says, stay gold!
  • This week’s Tuesday Night Tasting at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) features Full Sail, tonight at 7pm. Get free samples of the Wassail, Session Fest Lager, Wreck The Halls, and more. Get there early for seats.
  • This week’s Ten Buck Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) features the Belgian beers of B. United Importers. $10 gets you six tastings of beers like De Glazen Toren Cuvee Angelique, a Dubbel, and De Dolle Arabier, a Belgian Strong Pale Ale. The tasting gets underway at 7:30pm.
  • If American-brewed Belgian-style beers are your thing, Brewery Ommegang visits The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay) tonight starting at 6pm. They’ll be pouring Belgian Independence, Aphrodite, Rare Vos, Adoration, and more.
  • Empire visits Puck Fair (298 Lafayette St., at Houston St., Soho) tonight at 6pm. They’ll be pouring the Cream Ale, IPA, their hot-off-the-presses seasonal Winter Warmer, and more!
  • If you’re downtown, head to Ulysses’ Folk House (58 Stone St., at Pearl St., Financial District) for their meet the brewer night with Sixpoint. Meet brewer and owner Shane Welch from 5-7pm, and enjoy as the bar kicks off a month-long celebration of Sixpoint’s brews.
  • You can also head right across the street to The Growler Bites & Brews (55 Stone St., at Pearl St., Financial District), where Sierra Nevada will be pouring the Kellerweis, Pale Ale, Celebration Ale, and more from 7-9pm.

Happy Hour: Repeal Day Edition

It’s Monday, December 5th… Repeal Day! 78 years ago today, Prohibition was repealed after passage of the 21st Amendment. Celebrate… here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s Rare Beer Night at Valhalla (815 9th Ave., at 54th St., Hell’s Kitchen) starting at 6pm. They’ll be pouring some hard-to-get brews like Rogue John John Juniper Pale Ale, Allagash Interlude, a 2005 vintage Smuttynose Wheat Wine, and more, plus some surprises as well!
  • Empire Brewing visits The Double Windsor (210 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace) tonight starting at 7pm, pouring the IPA, Wheatwine, Winter Warmer, and more. Plus, The DW’s Trivia Night starts at 8pm, when you can win free beer!
  • Heartland Brewery celebrates the release of the winning beer from this past summer’s homebrew contest - Sir Blackheart by homebrewer Peter Cowles. The first mug is free starting at 7pm at Heartland Brewery Union Square (35 Union Sq. W., at 16th St., Union Square). The beer will be on tap at their Union Square and Empire State Building locations throughout the winter.
  • Starting today, Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) begins a weekly tradition of tapping a rare keg every Monday at 5pm. This week, it’s Hill Farmstead Nelson Sauvin. It’s like their Very Special Keg event, but in the form of a slow, steady trickle instead of all at once!
