A beer geek’s guide on how not to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

This was the line in front of McSorley’s last year. At 7:45am. When St. Patrick’s Day was on a Thursday. Beware.

Last year, just before St. Patrick’s Day, I was at Good Beer having a pint when someone walked in and asked the owner, “do you guys carry green beer? Like, for St. Patrick’s Day?”

He laughed. I hung my head in shame and shook it in disapproval.

Friends, tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day, and yes, you’re probably going to drink. But there are certain commandments to follow that will make your drinking holiday far more tolerable:

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, March 15th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) taps a cask of Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier today at 4pm. Come enjoy a rare cask of this traditional German Lenten beer!
  • It’s Troegs Night at Breukelen Bier Merchants (182 Grand St., at Driggs Ave., Williamsburg) tonight from 7-10pm. Get the Nugget Nectar on tap, plus Javahead Stout and the newest beer in their Scratch Series: #55 Imperial IPA.
  • Bronx Ale House (216 W. 238th St., at Broadway, Kingsbridge, Bronx) hosts their NCAA Tournament kickoff party tonight at 5pm with a tap takeover from GreatBrewers.com. They’ll have beers on tap from Blue Point, Victory, Heavy Seas, Flying Dog, and many more! Forget March Madness, this is Beer Madness!
  • It’s Vintage Beer Night at Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg) tonight starting at 5pm. They’ll have some great rare, old beers on tap, like a 2007 Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, 2005 Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter, 2008 Dogfish Head Olde School, and tons more!
  • Imperial Stout Weekend kicks off today at 2pm at Brouwerij Lane (78 Greenpoint Ave., at Franklin St., Greenpoint). While it runs all weekend long, stop by tonight for one of these big, boozy, roasty beers, like North Coast Old Rasputin, Emelisse Peated Imperial Stout, and Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti.
  • Get your fix of the Oskar Blues Deviant Dale’s tonight at 7pm at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope). They’ll also tap some other brews from the Colorado brewery, and have some special cans on hand, too!
  • Further down 5th Avenue, Fornino Park Slope (256 5th Ave., at Carroll St., Park Slope) hosts a five-course beer dinner tonight with Peak Organic. $45 gets you pairings like Shrimp & Pepper Crostini with the Simcoe Spring Ale and Grilled Marinated Skirt Steak and Potato Gratin with King Crimson Imperial Red.   • Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) hosts Chef Tommy Harder for a beer-and-food pairing from 3-5pm today. Stop in  for three small bites paired with three beers for just $15!
  • Sierra Nevada hosts a tasting at The Growler Station (26 W. 8th St., at MacDougal St., Greenwich Village) tonight from 6-9pm. Sample their new cans of Pale Ale and Torpedo IPA!
  • Prepare for St. Patty’s Day with samples of Brooklyn’s Dry Irish Stout and Black Chocolate Stout at Duane Reade’s Brew York City Growler Bar @ 76th (2148 Broadway, at 76th St., Upper West Side) today from 5-7pm. They’ll be pouring growlers, too!
  • It’s New York Beer Night at The Irish American (17 John St., at Nassau St., Financial District), feauring Sixpoint, Greenport Harbor, Blue Point, and more! Things get underway at 6pm.
  • The latest in the Abita Select Series hits Nita Nita (146 Wythe Ave., at N. 8th St., Williamsburg) tonight at 5pm. Try the Imperial Red Ale, and have some Turbodog while you’re at it!
