BrewDog Rolls Out in NYC This Week
image

BrewDog is launching in New York City for the second time. More than half a decade ago, the brewery, which is based in Aberdeen, Scotland, sent beer to the US through an importer. But as their popularity grew back home in the UK and throughout Europe, they dialed back their US distribution until they could build a brewery stateside. Last year, that plan came to fruition with a production facility on a 42-acre site just outside Columbus, Ohio. Now, they’re back in New York with beer from their American brewery, launching with events across the city this week.

Top Hops has been a part of the pop-up circuit over the past year, making appearances at several of Urbanspace’s outdoor food markets last summer. Now, they’re getting a permanent outpost at the newest food hall, Urbanspace @ 570 Lex in Midtown. The bar will allow visitors to grab a draft beer to accompany food from vendors like Bobwhite Counter, Tuck Shop, Roberta’s, and Kuro-Obi Ramen. The market will be in the GE Building, an Art Deco high rise that dates to 1931 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The market opens on March 28th.

Go Big or Go Home: Mugs’ Split Thy Skull Fest is This Weekend
image

There are not many more traditions on New York’s craft beer scene as old as this one: for the 19th year, Mugs Alehouse (125 Bedford Ave., at N. 10th St., Williamsburg) is dedicating all of their taps to barleywines and other big beers for their annual Split Thy Skull event.

The festival kicks off at 11am this Saturday and runs through Sunday, with different tap lists both days. Some of the kegs are rarities, some are aged, and some are straight-up classic high-gravity beers. Some come from across the world, some come from across Newtown Creek.

There’s no admission fee, and food will be available all day to soak up all that alcohol. But seriously, take it nice and easy with the ABV levels of some of these beers. And the good news is most of them are served in small, manageable pours. There are plenty of great options on the full list, which is after the jump:
