Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, March 29th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • The East Coast v. West Coast Heavy Metal Brew Tour makes its next stop tonight at Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village). At 7pm, they’ll play heavy metal from both coasts and serve beer from both coasts. In the East Coast corner: Victory and Smuttynose! In the West Coast corner: Ballast Point and Lagunitas! You get to decide who reins supreme! Meet some metal artists, hear some metal playlists, and drink some awesome beers!
  • Bronx Ale House (216 W. 238th St., at Broadway, Kingsbridge, Bronx) hosts Tröegs tonight starting at 6pm. They’ll pour the Troegenator, Nugget Nectar, the new Scratch Beer #59: Mighty Moose Mild, and much more!
  • The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) hosts Long Island’s very own Greenport Harbor tonight starting at 7pm. They’ll pour the Triton Barleywine, Imperial Stout, Spring Turning Rye Saison, a cask of the Harbor Ale dry-hopped with Citra hops, and lots more!
  • The week-long anniversary celebration at The Queens Kickshaw (40-17 Broadway, at 41st St., Astoria) ends with a finale tonight at 6:30pm with live music, cheesecake, a toast, and special anniversary beers like Davidson Brothers 15th Anniversary, Weyerbacher Sixteen, and Uinta 17th Anniversary Barleywine.
  • Join Bronx Brewery at Whole Foods Bowery Beer Room (95 E. Houston St., at Chrystie St., Lower East Side) tonight from 5-8pm. They’ll be pouring samples of their Bronx Pale Ale and pouring growlers to go, too!
  • Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) begins a new Thursday tradition: the Thursday Tap. Each week at 5pm, they’ll tap a rare keg, and you’ll get to unleash a frenzy on it. This week, it’s the Kissmeyer Stockholm Syndrome Double IPA, a powerful IPA from Denmark with tons of American and New Zealand hops.
  • Tonight, Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) dedicates their taps to Colorado’s Breckenridge Brewery starting tonight at 7pm! Try a bunch of their beers, including a very special keg of the 471 IPA aged in a Stranahan whiskey barrel.

Happy Hour: The Full Vermonty

It’s Wednesday, March 28th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Come early and often for the annual Vermont Beer & Cheese event at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) starting today at 3pm. They’ll be pouring beers from tons of Vermont breweries, including Hill Farmstead, The Alchemist, and many others that we are not at liberty to name. And there will be cheese, too… from Vermont, of course.
  • Enjoy brews from Harpoon and Cape Ann tonight at The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay). Have the Catamount Maple Wheat, Leviathan Series Quad, and more from Harpoon, and the Honey Pils, Doppelweizen, and more from Cape Ann. Plus, in the New England spirit, they’ll be passing around free New England Clam Chowder Croquettes starting at 6pm!
  • Taproom 307 (307 3rd Ave., at 24th St., Murray Hill) throws their San Diego Beer Night tonight starting at 7pm. Enjoy brews from Green Flash, Ballast Point, and many more breweries straight outta California!
  • Have some Fullers tonight at Top Hops Beer Shop (94 Orchard St., at Broome St., Lower East Side). They’ll be pouring the London Pride, ESB, and Bengal Lancer IPA starting at 7pm.
  • Goose Island serves up some beers at Downtown Bar & Grill (160 Court St., at Dean St., Cobble Hill) tonight starting at 7pm. Have some tap beers like Honkers and the Nut Brown, or raid their bottle selection of Goose Island’s smaller-batch beers.

Happy Hour: Drink a Human Blockhead, See a Human Blockhead

It’s Tuesday, March 27th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Kelso of Brooklyn visits Good Beer (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A) tonight starting at 6:30pm. Enjoy beers on tap for pints and growlers like the Red Wine Barrel Aged IPA, Industrial IPA, the Rauchbier, and more!
  • The East Coast v. West Coast Heavy Metal Brew Tour heads to Queens for its next stop tonight at Sunswick 35/35 (35-02 35th St., at 35th Ave., Astoria). At 9pm, they’ll play heavy metal from both coasts and serve beer from both coasts. In the East Coast corner: Victory and Smuttynose! In the West Coast corner: Ballast Point and Lagunitas! You get to decide who reins supreme!
  • Tonight at 7:30pm, Radegast Hall & Biergarten (113 N. 3rd St., at Berry St., Williamsburg), Mikkeller pays a visit with some of its Single-Hop Series beers, including the Bravo, Summit, Tomahawk, and Apollo.
  • Peak Organic hosts the weekly Tuesday Night Tasting at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope). Starting at 7pm, get guided through a free tasting with Mike Cadoux, as he serves up some of the East Coast’s finest organic brews.
  • Shmaltz hosts a tap takeover and sideshow showcase tonight at Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown). Starting at 7pm, Donny Vomit “The Human Blockhead” and Heather Holiday “The Sword Swallower” will wow the crowd as they enjoy brews like the barrel-aged Funky Jewbelation and the Lenny’s Bittersweet RIPA.

When Blind Tiger was a coffee shop

This week, Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) celebrated its 15th anniversary. Since 1997, they’ve been pouring great craft beer in the West Village. Anyone who’s new to the craft beer scene or new to New York may take for granted that when they saddle up to the bar there, they’ll have the choice of some excellent craft beers. But for a brief period in 2006, Blind Tiger didn’t sell beer at all. It wasn’t by choice; they couldn’t get a liquor license. So they became a coffee shop.

Happy Hour: Vermont Special Keg

It’s Monday, March 26th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s a super-secret keg of a very popular double IPA from Vermont. Don’t get a big head about it, but You’ll want to put this event on the top of your list.
  • Get schooled in beer with Beer School at Taproom 307 (307 3rd Ave., at 24th St., Murray Hill). All March long, Beer Sommelier Hayley Jensen hosts an educational tasting each Monday at 6 and 8pm. For $50, experience an educational tasting, and get a beer goodie bag to take home when it’s over! After a month of touring the world’s best beers, this week’s topic is American Beer! Call Taproom 307 at (212) 725-4766 to reserve a spot.
  • Homebrewers in Brooklyn can head to Beer Table (427B 7th Ave., at 15th St., Park Slope) tonight at 9pm for their monthly homebrewers’ meetup. Share your homebrew, try others, and meetup with fellow homebrewers for some tips and tricks to perfect your brews.
