Join us for trivia this Wednesday at Breukelen Bier Merchants

image

This Wednesday, April 4th, and on the first Wednesday of every month, we’re hosting Brews & Clues, a new trivia night at one of our favorite beer shops, Breukelen Bier Merchants (182 Grand St., at Driggs Ave., Williamsburg)

If you’ve never been, Breukelen Bier Merchants has one of the most extensive beer selections in Brooklyn - and no cappage fee, so you can drink any bottle in the store! Plus, their pints are some of the most reasonably-priced in Williamsburg, at $5-6 each.

We’ll be playing four rounds of team trivia starting at 7:30pm, and to the winner goes beer to go! No more spoiling your trivia winnings by downing that bar tab the same night! You can play with up to three other people to maintain a well-rounded team. We’ll have categories like movies, geography, and - yes - beer, so choose your team wisely!

Hope to see you there!

Happy Hour: Ring the Dinner Bell

It’s Monday, April 2nd. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s a beer straight outta Vermont, the Hill Farmstead Society and Solitude.
  • Sixpoint hosts a beer pairing dinner tonight at Alobar (46-42 Vernon Blvd., at 47th Rd., Long Island City) from 5:30-10pm. $50 gets you five courses and five beers, like Pork Terrine Grilled Cheese with Righteous Rye and Scallops and Braised Pork Belly with Brownstone.
  • Taproom 307 (307 3rd Ave., at 24th St., Murray Hill) also hosts a beer dinner tonight from 7-10pm featuring beers from Michigan’s Kuhnhenn. Among the pairings: Sweet Chili Fried Calamari with the Double Rice IPA and a Peanut Butter & Bacon Mini Burger with the Conundrum British Mild. The four beers and small plates are just $25.
  • Head to South 4th Bar (90 S. 4th St., at Berry St., Williamsburg) for $4 pints of the two finalist beers in their Brewpointopia Competition, which pits beers from Blue Point against beers from Sixpoint. Starting at 6pm, you choose who wins: Sixpoint Harbinger or Blue Point Pale Ale.

First Look at Randolph Beer

image

We’re usually quite happy to see a new beer-centric bar open, so we looked forward to the opening of Randolph Beer (343 Broome St., at Bowery, Little Italy). Unfortunately, while it does boast an excellent selection of craft beer along with a pleasant atmosphere and good food, it also has confirmed our worst fears: beer price gouging is alive and well on the island of Manhattan.

Sixpoint to release four-ounce “picokeg”

The following piece was an April Fools Day prank that we published on April 1, 2012. This is NOT a real news story, and the suckers who believed it was are now kicking themselves for being so gullible.

Last summer, Sixpoint released their series of 16-ounce “nanokegs” to rave reviews. Then, they released their double IPA, Resin, in 12-ounce skinny tallboy cans. Now, they’re taking it to the next level with their new high-test barleywine in stubby four-ounce cans they’re calling “picokegs.”
