Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, April 5th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • The Bruery visits Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg) tonight starting at 5pm. Enjoy some rare brews from Orange County, California like the Smoking Wood Rauchbier, Sour in the Rye wild ale, and the White Oak wheatwine.
  • Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) continues their new Thursday tradition: the Thursday Tap. Each week at 5pm, they’ll tap a rare keg, and you’ll get to unleash a frenzy on it. This week, it’s the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp #67 Transporter, brewed at Beer Camp in Chico, California with our friend John Holl.
  • Long Island newcomer Spider Bite comes to Breukelen Bier Merchants (182 Grand St., at Driggs Ave., Williamsburg) tonight at 7pm, with Boris the Spider Imperial Stout, First Bite Pale Ale, and more. Be among the first to drink ‘em in Brooklyn!
  • Growler Station (26 W. 8th St., at MacDougal St., Greenwich Village) hosts a tasting of Breckenridge tonight from 6-9pm, serving up samples of their Imperial IPA, Vanilla Porter, and their seasonal Summer Bright wheat beer.
  • Belgium’s St. Feuillien and its owner Dominique Friart visits Bier International (2099 Frederick Douglass Blvd., at 113th St., Harlem) tonight at 7pm, pouring both the Grand Cru and the Triple.

Happy Hour: Our Trivia Night tonight (oh, and lots more)

It’s Wednesday, April 4th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Brew York, New York presents our Brews & Clues Trivia Night tonight at 7:30pm at Breukelen Bier Merchants (182 Grand St., at Driggs Ave., Williamsburg). Answer trivia questions (some are even about beer) and win beer while you enjoy some fine craft beers like The Bruery Saison de Lente, Carton Brunch Dinner Grub, and High & Mighty Beer of the Gods!
  • 61 Local (61 Bergen St., at Smith St., Carroll Gardens) hosts their first tasting in their Meet Your Maker Series. This month, enjoy cheeses from Saxelby Cheesemongers and beers from Kelso of Brooklyn, and meet the people behind both! The pairing is $35 and runs from 7-9pm. Proceeds benefit the Brownsville Student Farm Project.
  • Brooklyn Brewery visits Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) starting at 3pm today. Garrett Oliver will be on hand as the break out the good stuff on tap, like the Old Blunderbuss, Cookie Jar Porter, the new Oishi saison, and tons more surprises!
  • They normally pour exclusively American craft beer, but for April Fools’ Week, The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay) pours some European craft beers tonight, from breweries like Denmark’s Mikkeller and Japan’s Hitachino. Everything kicks off at 6pm, when they’ll pass around free smoked salmon canapes.
  • Shmaltz visits One Stop Beer Shop (134 Kingsland Ave., at Beadel St., Greenpoint) tonight from 6-9pm. Get your hands on some offbeat brew from the He'brew and Coney Island Lager lines!
  • St. Feuillien is in town this week, and owner Dominique Friart is visiting from Belgium along with the crew from Artisinal Imports. They’ll be at The Ginger Man (11 E. 36th St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) at 5pm and then up at Dive Bar (732 Amsterdam Ave., at 96th St., Upper West Side) starting at 7pm!
  • City Swiggers (320 E. 86th St., at 2nd Ave., Upper East Side) hosts Kelso of Brooklyn tonight starting at 6:30pm, pouring their Pilsner, IPA, Rauchbier, and the Brandy Barrel-aged Recessionator!
  • Taproom 307 (307 3rd Ave., at 24th St., Murray Hill) hosts their Oregon Beer Night tonight from 7-10pm. Enjoy beers from Hood River’s Full Sail and Portland’s Widmer Brothers… for just $5 a pint!
  • In Queens, Founders takes over the taps at Mosaic Cafe (25-19 24th Ave., at 26th St., Astoria) tonight at 6:30pm. Yes, they’ll have the Kentucky Breakfast Stout on tap, along with Red’s Rye PA, Double Trouble, and more!
  • Visit New England without leaving Manhattan with a Harpoon tasting at Growler Station (26 W. 8th St., at MacDougal St., Greenwich Village) tonight starting at 6pm. They’ll pour you free tastes of the Rich & Dan Rye IPA, UFO White, and more!
  • Flying Dog takes over the taps at Top Hops Beer Shop (94 Orchard St., at Broome St., Lower East Side)! They’ll be pouring Underdog Lager, Woody Creek Wit, and Gonzo Imperial Porter tonight from 6-9:30pm.
  • It’s baseball’s opening night tonight! Celebrate with a free tasting from Brooklyn Brewery from 5-7pm in the bar at Virgil’s (152 W. 44th St., at Broadway, Times Square). To stay true to the theme, obviously they’ll be pouring the Pennant Ale along with other Brooklyn brews!

On April 14th, things get dark at Brooklyn Brewery

Next Saturday, April 14th, Brooklyn Brewery is hosting a party that harkens back to early 90s, when illegal warehouse parties called “Brooklyn Brownouts” took place regularly in Williamsburg. This time, it’s above the table, and they’re calling it Brooklyn Blackout. It’s a celebration of darkness: drink dark beer, eat dark food, and dance to dark music in the darkness… and it’s just $20!

Happy Hour: Breakfast for Dinner

It’s Tuesday, April 3rd. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Founders takes over the taps at Bar Great Harry (280 Smith St., at Sackett St., Carroll Gardens) tonight… and yes, they’ll have Kentucky Breakfast Stout on tap, along with Curmudegon’s Better Half, Devil Dancer, and many more! The beers go on tap at 2pm, but from 6-10pm, they’ll all be just $5!
  • Ulysses’ Folk House (58 Stone St., at Pearl St., Financial District) hosts their Brewery of the Month, Flying Dog, tonight starting at 5pm. They’ll roll out some of the first of the Wildeman, a beer previously only available in Amsterdam, plus Double Dog Double Pale Ale and a cask of the Snake Dog IPA.
  • 67 Burger Park Slope (234 Flatbush Ave., at Bergen St., Park Slope) hosts a 20x20x20 Dinner with Sixpoint tonight, with seatings at 6pm, 7pm, and 8pm. The dinner gets you 20 ounces of beer and 20 ounces of beef for just $20, with pairings like an Italian Veggie Burger paired with the Harbinger Saison and the Southwestern Burger paired with Bengali Tiger.   • This week’s Ten Buck Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) celebrates Farmhouse Ales! $10 gets you six tastings of beers like The Bruery Saison Rue, DuPont Bio Foret, Haandbryggeriet Hesjeol, and more! The tasting gets underway at 7:30pm.
  • Stone takes over the taps at Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) all day and night with “Brews & Funk Night.” Enjoy beers like the 2011 Belgo-Anise Russian Imperial Stout, Oaked Arrogant Bastard, the 11.11.11 Vertical Epic, and more from 3-10pm.
  • Over in Jersey, it’s The Bruery Night at The Iron Monkey (97 Greene St., at York St., Jersey City, NJ). Starting at 7pm, enjoy beers like Saison de Lente, White Oak, Mischief, and more, plus meet Jonas Nemura… the coolest guy from The Bruery without the last name “Rue.”

Sixpoint Beer is Culture Contest returns for third year

For the past two years, Sixpoint has encouraged artists and design to let beer inspire them around the theme, “Beer is Culture.” The winning poster last year, pictured above, is just one way to visualize the ways that beer is part of our lives, and how it is a cornerstone of civilization. So, for the third year, Sixpoint’s Beer is Culture Contest returns, and with a nice prize to boot!
