First Look at Beer Boutique

image

In a year full of openings of flashy, oversized beer venues in New York, sometimes you just want to feel at home in some place a bit more cozy. Thankfully, there’s a much more modest spot has opened in Williamsburg - Beer Boutique (497 Union Ave., at Meeker Ave., Williamsburg). Tucked away in a shop that’s barely 200 square feet, this beer shop still packs a punch in terms of selection, yet you’ll never get lost or overwhelmed in a sea of beers.

Happy Hour: From the other end of Long Island

It’s Monday, April 23rd. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Southampton takes over the taps tonight at Alewife Queens (5-14 51st Ave., at 5th St., Long Island City) starting at 6pm. Enjoy beers like the Burton IPA, Secret Ale, Double White, and many more! Plus, try a food pairing with a small plate, like Littleneck Clams paired with the Biere de Mars.

  • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s a rare find from the West Coast: AleSmith Nautical Nut Brown.

  • Our friend and Ithaca sales rep Eric VanZile celebrates his birthday today, so that means lots of beers from I-Town tonight at George Keeley (485 Amsterdam Ave., at 83rd St., Upper West Side). Even if you don’t know him, it’s a good excuse to check out the brand-new Fourteen, plus grab some Partly Sunny, Cascazilla, and more!

  • Enjoy a tasting from Breckenridge at Best Yet Market (2187 Frederick Douglass Blvd., at W. 118th St., Harlem) tonight from 5-8pm. Have a sample of the Vanilla Porter or 471 IPA, then check out one of the best beer varieties in Harlem!

Beer Here exhibition debuts in May at NY Historical Society

image

As we’ve discussed on this site before, there’s a long tradition of beer brewing in New York City. From the Dutch settlers who established the city’s first brewery to the booming breweries in Brooklyn of the 20th Century, beer has always been a part of this city’s history. And starting in May, The New-York Historical Society Museum will feature a new exhibit that details the storied past of beer in the five boroughs called Beer Here: Brewing New York’s History.

Your Beery Weekend: April 20-22

image

We’ve got a great deal for you: go to one of our favorite beer stores this weekend - Breukelen Bier Merchants (182 Grand St., at Driggs Ave., Williamsburg) - and they’ll give you 10% off bottles and beer merchandise you buy… just because you’re cool and we love you! Okay, fine, it’s because they’re celebrating their first anniversary all weekend long, with live music on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, plus a special tap list, with beers like Smuttynose Really Old Brown Dog, and the Alesmith IPA on tap for the first time ever in New York. They’ll also pour a gravity cask of Wandering Star Mild at Heart, offer select $3 draughts, food, giveaways, and more. It’s a weekend-long extravaganza! Leave some room for it in your calendar.

And while you’re at it, leave some room for these other beer events listed below…

  • Bronx, meet Brooklyn! It’s Kelso of Brooklyn Night at Bronx Ale House (216 W. 238th St., at Broadway, Kingsbridge, Bronx) tonight starting at 7pm. They’ll be pouring the Pilsner, Industrial IPA, Recessionator, Sour Quad, and more fresh beer from Clinton Hill.

  • New York Beer Company (321 W. 44th St., at 8th Ave., Midtown West) hosts Bronx Brewery tonight from 6-10pm. Meet the brewer, enjoy special food pairings, and have some free Bronx Pale Ale from 6-7pm!

They’ll have some rare brews, including the Vertical Epic 10.10.10, Oaked Arrogant Bastard, a cask of Smoked Porter with Coconut, and more. Plus, at 8pm, enjoy a “grand tasting” of the beers with food pairings, curated by Get Real.

  • Celebrate a “Festival of Hops” tonight at Coopers Craft & Kitchen (87 2nd Ave., at 5th St., East Village). Starting at 7pm, enjoy a bevy of hoppy ales to whet the lupulin-head in all of us. Beers will include the Heavy Seas Black Cannon, Mikkeller Single Hop Summit, Blue Point White IPA, Left Hand 400-lb. Monkey, and so much more!

  • Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) continues their Thursday tradition: the Thursday Tap. Each week at 5pm, they’ll tap a rare keg, and you’ll get to unleash a frenzy on it. This week, it’s De La Senne Stouterik, a Dry Irish Stout from Belgium. Yeah, wrap your head around that!

  • Enjoy beers from Empire at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) tonight starting at 7pm. They’ll pour the locally-brewed Amber Ale and IPA, plus Liv & Let Rye and - because we love punny beer names - Empire Strikes Bock.

  • Samuel Adams visits Buddha Beer Bar (4497 Broadway, at 192nd St., Washington Heights) tonight from 7-10pm for the bar’s first-ever tasting. Get a slew of rare beers from Boston Beer Co., including the Tasman Red, Cinder Bock Rauchbier, Griffins Bow barleywine, and a whole lot more!

  • Taste a free sample of Brooklyn Summer Ale as it hits shelves tonight at the Brew York City Growler Bar @ 76th (2148 Broadway, at 76th St., Upper West Side) from 7:30-9:30pm.

  • In Jersey, The Iron Monkey (97 Greene St., at York St., Jersey City) hosts Bear Republic tonight. The fun gets underway at 6pm, with Heritage Ale, Mach 10, Nor Cal Ale, Roggenbier, and much more on tap all night long!

Something’s brewing up in Newburgh

image

The Hudson Valley city of Newburgh isn’t known for much these days. Unfortunately, it’s probably best known for falling on rough times lately, with a high crime rate, a tumultuous local government, and an under-utilized waterfront. But with the official opening of a new brewery in the city this week, it may soon become known for something much better: beer.
